Despite my personal challenges as a member of Smart-Alecks Anonymous, I am going to refrain from mentioning Michael Chertoff's gut's solidarity or the ever-present specter of the AJ-esque publicity stunt and just keep it at brass tacks level: People who physically resist the war deserve our support first and foremost, and our cynicism and smart-assery only after that.

As many of you may know, Portland's indymedia site is distinguished among the indymedia sites for having a thriving 9/11 truth page -- whereas indymedias like NYC's censor all 9/11 truth articles. However, Truthers have noted that the page tends to favor things that make 9/11 truth look bad and/or crazy, and thoughtful material or critiques of the movement tend not to show up (it's that pesky server!)

Because of the way 9/11 truth tends to be presented there, it is not at all uncommon to see comments like this from indymedia's leftie readers:

Keith Ellison, the first Muslim in the House of Representatives, let it all hang out when he addressed a group of atheists in that notorious atheist hotbed, Edina, MN, on Sunday:

On comparing Sept. 11 to the burning of the Reichstag building in Nazi Germany: "It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that. After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it and it put the leader of that country [Hitler] in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted. Here a French "peloton de vérité" (truth squad) gets Christine Boutin, minister in the new Sarkozy government, to admit that there might be something to the assertion that Bush was behind 9/11. Basically, she says that the websites that discuss the theories get so many hits that she has to ask herself if it is possible. ReOpen911.info have gotten some flak for cutting the video off where they did, evidently right before she says that she personally does not "believe" it.

Our nation is in crisis. Our Constitution has been shredded. The peace movement has run aground, and impeachment is “off the table.” The war machine continues to trample the will of the people and crush any opposition in its murderous drive toward global domination.

GeorgeWashington has stepped in to take some of the heat for Reprehensor, who has been buried under an avalanche of negative feedback about his plan to moderate comments. For some reason, I'm almost more offended at GW's patronizing attempt to calm the rabble than I was with Rep's more matter-of-fact announcement of the advent of unabashed censorship.

First, GW suggests that dz thought of abandoning comments several times, because they led to the need for greater bandwidth and thus higher operating costs. Yeah, that's right -- and that's why a number of us coughed up money for a new server. Have you noticed, though, that it's been weeks since comments blacked out due to server overload? The site seemed to be operating without loading delays as well. In fact, things seemed to be toodling along just fine.

But wait! That's not why the Hoover Dam on comments was put into place, rather

dz notes in a new blog at 911b that "effective immediately" he is no longer a team member. My impression is that he has been increasingly stressed by the demands of running the site, and I'm glad that he has made the decision to turn it over to Reprehensor rather than shutting it down or further limiting it. (For example, he had given consideration to eliminating comments.)

Amidst the appreciative farewell comments, however, we see several celebrating the idea of banning "infiltrators." For example, Victronix, a relatively new member who seems to exist for the sole purpose of condemning those who do not hew closely to the Jim Hoffman agenda as COINTELPRO, writes:

Banning is the antidote to a mentally ill and infiltrated movement.

This is part one (duh) of a five part series, and "socialservice" definitely leads with his/her strongest arguments. Having watched this part several times, I would now definitely entertain the idea that some faked video was broadcast on 9/11.
