they migrated to those places at some point just like their asshole conquerors did. let's face it, if god exists in that sense "he" gave the whole world to humanity as a whole. now he obviously must have had some kind of beef with the other animals to have done so, never mind the poor defenseless plants, but there it is.
I prefer to think that we are all part of a living universe and as such have the power to determine the nature of that universe--whether it is one where love and beauty thrive or one where suffering and ugliness are the norm. Once we decide which we prefer it's up to us to will that universe into being. Maybe it will never come, but we can't know that and so we must try. We may not go to heaven when we die but I have a feeling that how we live has some impact on the nature of our experience after we die. Sometimes I think we are destined to live eternally as if in a dream, and that the content of those dreams will reflect the path we chose in life...
