At least a half dozen times in recent months, the suggestion has come from serious people that Jews predominate in the American media--that if we are not dominant, we are a major bloc. In aYivo event on Jews in journalism I've blogged about, a questioner said that Jews' outsize proportion in the media has granted us "a large influence over power." In his groundbreaking paper on the New York Times's role in shaping American policytoward Israel, Jerome Slater spoke of "religious beliefs and identifications" that affected the Times, and cited former executive editor Max Frankel's admission in his memoir (one also cited by Walt and Mearsheimer): "I was much more deeply devoted to Israel than I dared to assert."
Lately broadcast reporter John Hockenberry related that he wanted to do a piece on the hijackers' motivationafter 9/11 but that NBC executive Jeff Zucker scotched the notion:
"Maybe," Zucker said, "we ought to do a series of specials on firehouses where we just ride along with our cameras. Like the show Cops, only with firefighters."... [H]e could make room in the prime-time lineup for firefighters, but then smiled at me and said, in effect, that he had no time for any subtitled interviews with jihadists raging about Palestine. [Weiss's emphasis]
Then last month at a forum at the Nixon Center, former Bushie Dov Zackheim said, Jews don't dominate the policy-making process, but the media is a different story...

sorry, I couldn't resist. isn't it funny that your first assumption was that I wrote an insensitive title when in fact the whole point was to show that this attitude that is so maligned in the US is in fact embraced by some Zionists?
Mind you, I have absolutely no problem with Jews hanging out together, forming associations, segregating themselves if that's what they want, being involved in banking, the media, or anything else. To me a Jew is someone who considers themselves a Jew. I see everyone as a fellow human being and would never hold any individual responsible or accountable for the misdeeds of someone who happened to share a trait in common with them.
I have a BIG problem with ideologies--most of them in fact. Be it Marxism, Capitalism, Zionism, Scientology, or any other. They are most often used to manipulated masses of people to harm one another. It is up to us--those now living--to raise humanity out of the mire. To do so we will have to transcend the current situation in significant ways, not just ways that we call siginificant--i.e. pain will be involved (as it has been for all of us in this crazy movement!)
What strikes me the most is how unnecessary all of this is. Most people get along just fine until some jerk comes along to ruin things by trying to gain an advantage over others. So long as we are deceived into so many varieties of false consciousness I'm afraid that there will be the need for people to rise up to the occasion and make the sacrifices that will compensate for all the wickedness and ignorance that religion is supposed to deal with but fails so utterly and miserably at.
Anyway annoymouse, glad you're reading and critiquing--above all we value dialogue that is constructive, even if at times it must be contentious. We're all in this together.

Have you written to Phillip Weiss to ask him to change the title of his article? Because yeah, it does look bad doesn't it. But is this as bad as when CNN prints a misleading headline that makes people think the President of Iran is a jerk? Nope. And anyone who leaves this site thinking it's worthless is not someone who is ready for all the truth herein contained so it's probably for the best that they not stick around (sort of like natural selection.) Only by overcoming one's tendency to have knee-jerk reactions can one begin to share, learn and understand in earnest, which is what we're all about. But hey, thanks for sharing your opinion, the more dialogue the better.
