Building a Better Blog

gretavo's picture

Dear All,

I have been contacted by the Better Blog Bureau and they have told us that we are off their watch lists of bad blogs. This a great achievement, and it may now be time to respond to the WWW's complaints about the quality of the WTCD site itself.

Ergo, as such and so on, is anyone interested in contributing content in someway to the front page (http:wtcdemolition.com) The current three column format is easily divisible into two, three, six or more sections of the page. What to display on each could be left up to different people--it need not even be the homepage, could be a visual bulletin board of some kind.

It's just one idea, but it'd be nice to know what things we might accomplish as a group--who isn't glad for bruce1337's contribution of our snazzy logo after all!

So yeah, everyone, thanks for making this place what it is!

Hey, I scoped it out yesterday...

My one suggestion so far has to do with the reading list. I think there needs to be *something* attached to the mention of Eric Hufschmid so that people are aware that he is -- whatever he is -- who happened to produce a good book with lots of great pictures and diagrams a long time ago (suspicious to me in itself.)

gretavo's picture

a good idea

but since i'm talking major overhaul anyway, i think we can think bigger than just that! maybe we should make a list and ask any who want to to give their brief impression of the work and its overall place in the "truth movement"â„¢...

snazzy logo

oh, yeah, oh yeah! i wear my WTC demo T-shirt to the gym now!

i love that you have created a section for "recent audio"!!!!

perhaps some of those beautiful (nonoriginal) audio/video YouTubes could be listed also somehow? LIke the Billy Bragg, which i noticed is now on the front, but there have been incredible others submitted by Cass, the Wade in the Water one, etc. sometimes i just want to revisit these and am not sure how to find....

gretavo's picture

the blog's search function works pretty well

when you want to revisit old posts...

kate of the kiosk's picture

yeah, i put in Peter Gabriel, which was all i could remember

and i did get eventually to this one submitted by Cass....

but it would be nice to have them in their own little "fave YouTube" compartment.

that poetry reading by Suheir Hammad, submitted by Big_D:

and the Gilad Atzmon ...

or individuals could access and post themselves into the box.

I really encourage tinkering by people

with the appropriate permissions! If you have an administer button feel free to click it and explore, it's pretty hard to break anything so don't be bashful. i will otherwise certainly get around to implementing any and al suggestions for improvements including figuring out the Internal Server Error of Death message, it just might take longer than is ideal...

dicktater's picture

I think I lost my...

...administer button at the love-in last night. It must have fallen off when I made my spark. Oh well.

I was thinking about an effort at a contribution to the site. I can still try but, I guess I'll get my 'trib to you in a zip file.

casseia's picture

Check now

You might have to log out/ log back in.

dicktater's picture

You found my administrator button?

I don't remember seeing you at the love-in last night. Hell, I barely remember being at the love-in myself. You didn't by chance find my mood ring, did you? That thing set me back 26 bucks.

Honestly, I don't think I'd know an administrator button even if it bit me on my ISE. It's weird. I tried to log out and got hammered on ISEs. Then I thought, maybe if I eat my wtcdemo cookies like a good boy, that would cure what's ailing me. It got worse. Must have been bugs it 'em. Hell, I was banging on the door and screamin' "LET ME LOG IN, LET ME LOG IN" and all I was gettin' was ISEs. I was thinkin' that damn casseia done locked me out for good now. Then the blog suddenly flew open and finally, I was back inside. Except now I'm seeing double. Damn. There are two of me listed in the the Online users list. This is frightening.

Shit. I'm going back to bed.

gretavo's picture

beware zip files!

not a secure file format you know!

dicktater's picture

Could you?

Would you? Kindly point me to some whitepapers discussing this?

If you prefer to not receive archives in .zip format, is there another that you favor? gz, rar, 7zip?

The archive I would send would contain nothing but .htm, .jpg, and possibly .gif files anyway.

Annoymouse's picture

one that is up front about

one that is up front about its contents, like an mp3. :)

Tahooey's picture

good idea Kate; & oh yeah more ISEs

well Gretavo, i was thinking of asking you to expand 'recent audio' so if i upload another song or 2, i won't feel like i'm hogging up all the audio links.  Possibly take over the poll area since it seems to be under-utilized?

And sometimes I like just relaxing and watching videos on youtube etc., i agree it would be nice to have the relevant ones (from past comments & more) linked up from a sidebar menu-

Not sure what it would take to add an 'external audio links menu'; probably those with admin priveleges would need to add the links thru the menu admin. unless there's an easier way?

On another note, still getting the sporadic Internal Server Errors - Gretavo, did you ever pinpoint the cause? was wondering how much access you have on the server; can you see the logs? do you know what version of drupal you're running?

gretavo's picture

they come and go

the ISE's. usually refreshing a few times is all that's needed. i do have access to the logs on the server, what should I look for? Evry now and then the logs here on the blog (which a few of you can access) I see a ton of hits coming in and I block the address, but that hasn't been the case recently.... could it just be traffic jams?

Tahooey's picture

IS errors...

well i'm not sure but i think they should not ever happen unless something is misconfigured, i can't imagine why overloading would cause such an error - typically in such an event the server would either take forever, or not respond at all. To me it seems very strange that they happen sporadically, but if you can check the site's (apache) error log and see if there's anything that correlates to the ISE?  Maybe your SQL connection is failing for some reason.

(Do a 'tail -50 #error_log_file_name#' and maybe there would be some clues in there, since i've triggered at least a couple this morning already.)

anyway, i don't want to be a pest about it but i like to fix broken stuff if possible - and i'm working on a drupal site at my job - depending how much you want to try, we could possibly mirror the site and see if the same issues happen on a different server..

gretavo's picture

oh and the audio

you should put up and not worry. the "more" button will list all the past audio uploads. we want to see change! :)

Tahooey's picture

Weblinks menu

Hey, i tinkered around and turned on the "Weblinks" menu to show up on the right side at the bottom.  I put a few of the youtube links in to test it out - not ideal (2 clicks instead of 1) but it works, and anybody can add more under Create Content -> weblink

So perhaps this could work for the off-site video links?

gretavo's picture

awesome! that's the spirit!

I agree it sucks that it's a two click thing. then again, the links at the top right, starting with The Web Site are a new field I made for straight up html, which I guess could be duplicated and made into a list of links to videos, etc...

Tahooey's picture

hey i did more tinkering

i took out from the main (Navigation) menu the links to 'contact' and another 'weblinks' that didn't seem to go anywhere, and took out from the admin menu 'quiz results' and added in a new direct link to the comment approval queue.

but if you want a major overhaul maybe you should check out some more of the themes available...?  That's where scrubby's php might come in more handy, than the stuff i'm doing now. http://drupal.org/project/Themes

Annoymouse's picture

did my tinkering break something

or did hackers take down the east coast power grid?
where is everyone today - someone say "hi" at least, gretavo?

Ok i wasn't logged in, but it's all working for me, and no ISEs yet today...

Hi !

It seems like sometimes we all have a lull in the conversation.

Regarding ISEs, yesterday I checked "top visitors" and some IP from Hackensack, NJ, had over 2000 page generations in the last three days (and I thought I was bad). So I banned that IP and my impression is that ISEs have eased up.

What's in Hackensack? The Cialis factory?

Annoymouse's picture

that's usually what I see trigger them

those damn top visitors! good work cass.

kate of the kiosk's picture

thank gods, for you, Cass!!!!

wow. guardians of the fort.

Tahooey's picture

Hackensack - Is that all you get for your money?

i think that's a line from a billy joel song. you oughta know by now or something.

good call on banning that ip - haven't seen any errors today so far, so thanks!!!

and glad to know i didn't destroy the site with my clicking behind the scenes!

Annoymouse's picture

who needs a house out in

hackensack? is that all you get for your money?

if that's what you had in mind oh if thats what its all about mama if that's movin up then im....

MOVIN OUT. dad da da da dadda yatta yatta etc

P45's picture

Hackensack

is what my cat says prior to ejecting a furball.

I can also report no ISE's and quicker, nay instantaneous page loadage today.

kate of the kiosk's picture

way cool, Tahooey!

this site has some very talented and devoted persons involved!

Tahooey's picture

thanks Kate

Just doing what little I can - I like the truth and i like this site.
It's a really cool community here compared to other 'truth outlets'.
Plus i get to learn & practice some drupal, no charge :)

Tahooey's picture

thanks Scrubby! written in php

but one needn't know php to administer it since it's designed to be administered through the web.
www.drupal.org - if you were going to develop stuff for it then i imagine you need to be a php pro.  i'm still learning - it's pretty cool so far, there are a ton of modules for it.

the wtc7 animated gif is a gimme-

the wtc7 animated gif is a gimme- it's the single most powerful visual hook for noobs. Think about posting ae911truth's flash version:

I tried to post the code here but it doesn't work right in the preview. The flash movie shows fine, but it's outside the comment box, and trying to post it anyways leads to a 'Comment field is required.' error. I expect you'll be able to find the coding-- 911B had an entry some months back with the proper coding to add it to your site.

Otherwise, since you're a CD specialist site, embedding such flix as 911 Revisited, and 911 Mysteries could be useful. Is the later flick still in with the in crowd, since Sofia started pimping Barrett/Fetzer's Disinfo Fest video?

P45's picture

How about

one of these?

Not a good colour match I concede but MSM news sites should be made to wear these like the warning on a cigarette pack with something like - Warning: believing everything we tell you may lead to mass genocide - printed beneath.

i think i just came across the real BBB

apparently the "dot org" domain extension has been piratized, i.e. taken over by shills...

Trusted across all Trusted across all backgrounds, ages and nationalities, .ORG is where people turn to find credible information, get involved, fund causes and support advocacy. As a premier domain, .ORG provides an unrivaled channel to share ideas, to enhance lives, to advance your mission.

Anyone else feel vaguely nauseated by this?

in this month's hypocrisy newsletter

Grant from Humanity United to Fund Genocide Intervention Project
The Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government is the recipient of a three-year, $2,100,000 research grant from Humanity United. The research will identify operational requirements and adapt applicable military tools and approaches to the problem of halting mass atrocities.

gretavo's picture

who, one might ask...

... is humanity united? and why do i get the feeling that they're no more charitable than steve alten's shilling his product to our nation's schoolchildren?

juandelacruz's picture

Alten wants truthers to fund

Alten wants truthers to fund his disinfo campaign designed to malign truthers.

Maybe an arms manufacturer is backing Humanity United. HU then funds human rights researchers to find new uses of their weapons to protect people that are being killed by their weapons as well.

Very clever eh

juandelacruz's picture

Maybe they want to establish

Maybe they want to establish a downstream market, sell guns and shelters to communities rather than just to armies on both sides of the conflict which they already do.

gretavo's picture

itd be cool if

the preview of each blog had little avatars indicating who is commenting on it (around the avatar of the poster, who would be normal size)

larry horse's picture

or not

i don't like the idea. i enjoy opening a thread and seeing a comment from Lazlo, jpass, Lemonhoko and the ilk. (all right, not so much Lemonhoko, but i miss the goon.) an element of surprise, ya know? don't you and cass have your mugs posted on this site enough? ;)

dicktater's picture

Lot's of ISE's today

Just an FYI.
