Could Harvard's Faculty be Preparing a Truth Offensive?

I have no idea, but this is a very encouraging sign--see the text in bold below...

Professor To Bring Free Speech Motion to Faculty
Matory says speech impeded; others allege anti-Israel agenda
Published On 11/8/2007 1:13:45 AM
A professor who feels academic debate on the Israel-Palestine conflict has been stifled will push the full Faculty next week to explicitly embrace free speech at Harvard. But others allege that the move is motivated by ideology rather than free expression.

J. Lorand Matory ’82, professor of Anthropology and African-American Studies, appeared before the Faculty Council at its meeting yesterday to further discuss issues he raised in an op-ed in The Crimson on Sept. 14 and to discuss the motion he plans to present at next week’s Faculty meeting.

He argued in the September op-ed that those who question Zionism and Israeli policy toward Palestine “tremble in fear” of the backlash that would result from voicing their opinions.

“My colleagues are urging me to bring forward a resolution [to the Faculty meeting] in support of free speech,” he said. “I want for us to be able to talk openly. If there is fear and pain, it should be expressed.”

Judith L. Ryan, a German literature professor and member of the Faculty Council docket committee, said that the 18-member governing body of FAS hoped his presentation next week would usher in a broader discussion about free speech at Harvard.

“It wouldn’t just be about the Israel-Palestine issue,” she said. “Several people—and I would belong to those people—would hope that he would broaden his presentation.”

But Yiddish Literature Professor Ruth R. Wisse said that free speech is not Matory’s main concern.

“This is a bogus issue,” she said. “There is an agenda here and free speech is not it.”

Frankfurter Professor of Law Alan M. Dershowitz, known for his outspoken defense of Israel, said that Matory only advocates free speech when it supports his viewpoint.

“Professor Matory has no real interest in freedom of speech or academic freedom,” Dershowitz said. “He just disapproves of certain kind of speech and he is misusing academic freedom and freedom of speech to make an ideological argument.”

Because Dershowitz is not a member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, he will not be allowed to attend next week’s meeting unless invited. But he challenged Matory to debate the issue with him “on a level playing field.”

Matory said that he hopes his legislation will allow for all viewpoints to be heard on this particularly controversial issue.

“In the past, name-calling has overwhelmed civil debate,” Matory said. “I’m hoping to avoid this.”

RT- It's a leap to imagine

RT- It's a leap to imagine it's really 9/11 Truth they want dialog about. BTW I saw your similar thread at truthaction,
http://truthaction.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2574&sid=125802843f9caad3af...
where there are a few interesting remarks, and where you've made your reasons for optimism more clear.
Speaking of truthaction-- they've kept a reasonably "clean house" at their forums at least in comparison to 911B, but good grief there are some real dubious actors there. This recent Diane NYC Activist character is like a one-(wo)man divide/conquer brigade. Left/right, 'Jew-haters', LIHOP/MIHOP, on and on, it's one loaded engineered meme after another divide/conquer hand grenade. Yes Diane, we need to set up lefty/righty compartments within 911 Truth, so not to be associated with those other, undesirable kind of people. pffft.
Well you're doing a fine job discussing matters with her RT. But I hope you realize it's just for the peanut gallery- someone agenda-driven like her (or maybe she's sincere but hopelessly brainwashed by the [ed note:  I don't know what you mean by the term you've used here and because it is easily construed as inflammatory AND because you are not a registered user, I'm going to redact it.]?) is not going to magically be persuaded, and she'll use the (fake) "dialog" to lay a carpet of divide/conquer buzzwords to try to manipulate the amateurs into seeing divisions, taking sides and so forth.
As to the LIHOP/MIHOP discussion:
http://truthaction.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2571&sid=125802843f9caad3af...
I think the motives of those "twoofers" who seek to obfuscate the CDs of the 3 WTCs, are perfectly clear. "Limited Hangout" is indeed the game. They seek to protect the core of the 911 Fable: the hoax that Islamofascist ter'sts who hate us for our freedoms were primarily responsible for 911, & they just want to kill all of us, unless we kill them first! The core 'shadowy outside enemy' deception as a means of social control & continued warmongering must be preserved.
The current regime acting as caretakers of the empire can be rotated out based on some limited hangout 'LIHOP' revelations, but TPTB must preserve "the baby" of 911 IE their attempt to reorganize society around some [engineered] culture of fear over some [make-believe] outside enemy network- thus enabling the next caretaker regime to continue the exact same domestic police state oppression and plundering abroad as the current disgraced '911 LIHOP' regime.
The obvious WTC controlled demolition problem is so critical, because controlled demolition = MIHOP. MIHOP reveals the full extent of the 911 Conspiracy Industry (the war profiteer banksters, the MIC, big oil profits, the patriot act, global Gitmos, etc). (...with all due respect to the points of logical dilemma raised at the truthaction thread over the futility of trying to work with these LIHOP/MIHOP labels; I anticipate readers get my meaning herein)

...

I agree that Diane is a perplexing character -- I think that the easiest explanation may be that she is lacking some of the common online "social skills" that have do with listening and observing (yes, lurking) first and then gradually increasing your level of participation.   She really jumped in feet first.

Annoymouse's picture

Yeah, I just see her

Yeah, I just see her constantly beating the drum evoking all those worn out engineered memeplexes which I've spent the past several years "de-programming" from since the time I went down the 911 Truth rabbit hole and had to start questioning everything else I'd been lead to believe all my life. I throw her a bone that maybe she's just a well-meaning dupe to all that garbage, because I once was after all. But I read her comments, and one of her blog posts ("Taking responsibility.." or some such), and she really lays down those memes & buzzwords THICK. This raises questions to me about her agenda. I was really liking my lurking at the truthaction forum, but lately it's been like "oh gawd, the polite & civil divide/conquer provocateur is here, here we go again!"

Annoymouse's picture

This little exchange sort of

This little exchange sort of says it all, from a thread started by Left/Right/Diane, about "September threads on right wing views",
http://truthaction.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2582&start=15&postdays=0&po...

YT wrote:
The Left-Right thing is completely and utterly useless to me.

It's worth less than LIHOP-MIHOP as far as I'm concerned.

People should say where they're coming from instead of relying on these worn out falsely dichotomizing labels.

Is it okay if I don't want to play along and fit in your accepted box?"

Diane replied:
"To YT:

The terms "Left" and "Right" do have specific longstanding meanings, which I may go into in a future post -- although, by themselves, the terms "Left" and "Right" are an oversimplification of politics. Politics is multi-dimensional. "

See how balanced, and diplomatic she is? LOL Oh, and I *do trust* that she'll be making good on her threat to educate us all further about left/right in future posts...

"[ed note: I don't know

"[ed note: I don't know what you mean by the term you've used here and because it is easily construed as inflammatory AND because you are not a registered user, I'm going to redact it.]"

Interesting approach. The word was "Talmudist" which I just made up, but it's based on the Talmud, which is the widely inflammatory/offensive version of two main holy books of Judaism, the other being the Torah. See http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com

Mediocre choice of wording on my part. I was really referring to the whole schooling/MSM/Hollywood indoctrination we've had beat into our heads all our lives about Jews=Victims, irrational Jew-haters under every stone, Left-V-Right, yada yada.

Annoymouse will refrain from making up such new words in the future, :)

casseia's picture

Alrighty then...

Well, if you've read this blog long enough, chances are you've heard me opine that as far as problems WITHIN a religion go, they are better left to people who identify as members of the religion.  I understand your paragraph that starts with "mediocre" -- but you have to be aware that this site is already closely scrutinized by people who think we have a problem with da j00s qua j00s and I'm not going to let an annoymouse give them ammo.  But feel free to make up all the words you like -- we celebrate lexiflexibility here at wtcdemolition.

wow i missed a few something, but so did YALL!!

I'm still giddy from my day's truthing that began, no joke, at about 9:00 am and went through 3:30 or so.  handed out a TON (relatively speaking) of architects and engineers info cards.  they were goig almost as fast as the deception dollars used to go.  i don't want to understate this--today's reaction from the public astounded me.  we really are getting somewhere fast it seems.

as far as Diane the NY Activist goes, I initially had all the same thoughts--who is this presumptuous newbie!  :)     I came to think that her input in the LIHOP MIHOP debate as an outsider was refreshing--she was a good counterbalance between ArabBisque's blatant hypocrisy and my own strident insistence on sticking it to the LIHOPPERS.  I guess we'll have to wait for her to "show more leg" as it were before I can decide if she's just an awkward newcomer or if she has an agenda.  clearly she's concerned about anti-semitism and other anti-isms, which is fine, though I think it was weird the way she pulled out Henry Ford's The International Jew as if it were pure evil.  While the work has its problems, it's not as bad as the title sounds to us today.  Ford was not exactly a Jew hater, more of a WASP lover, and the book (which he did not write, but commissioned as a series of articles) is valuable as a more or less contemporary reaction of an American establishment figure to the publication of the Protocols.  Ford acknowledged that they may well as some people say be a fraud, but athat nonetheless one could read the content as a political program that indeed seemed to be in the process of being enacted, which no one who reads the Protocols can really deny, the issue being of course how accurate the attribution of this program to some cabal of old Jewish men somewhere is, as opposed to a non-religious elite who find it convenient to have the world thin kof their plot as "the Jews'" plot for purposes of covering their tracks and having a convenient scapegoat in the form of a group of people that christians long loved to hate...

So I'm eating dinner with the 'rents and watching the news

on NBC and what do I see?

The LA Police Dept have a scheme involving "mapping" the locations (presumably home, work, school, and mosque) of Muslim Angelenos that they're eager to get started on if those damn civil liberatarians will just shut their yaps.

In Colorado, Giuliani got Truth Squaded -- and they had a shot of some guy shouting at him that he was a criminal, followed by a good clear shot of another person's "9/11 Inside Job" sign.  They explained that the first guy thought G was a criminal because he had foreknowledge of 9/11 or some kind of crazy talk like that.  This in the first ten minutes or so of the corporate evening news.

I was flabbergasted by both of these things, for very different reasons.

the media are falling behind

they are risking ending up with their pants down and the public just staring at them like the sick degenerates they are...  :)

while it may go down to the wire, I think the truth has the inside track right now and if anyone is showing signs of fatigue it is the MSM and their BS.

Tahooey's picture

would you be so kind as to

elaborate with an example or two as to what you mean when you say:

"i don't want to understate this--today's reaction from the public astounded me."

I think we can all use some encouragement on the truth | public frontier.

gretavo's picture

just to start...

the fact that with my sign clearly visible I had people going out of their way on multiple occasions (like ten times as often as before) to take a card.  Also the glaring by its absence series of insults.  The cop who gave me a nod and a smile... the number of people saying "good work!"...  everything just seems to be going our way in the streets, just as it is on pretty much any online forum.  It is precisely this disconnect between reality and what the mainstream media are STILL trying to peddle that will eventually kill off what remains of their credibility.

A truth offensive would certainly be appreciated.

However, for the time being, how about stressing the divide between pretense and practise, as demonstrated by Harvard's motto? In these circumstances, it's definitely an invitation! Here's a typographic doodle that conveys the point:

satireV

gretavo's picture

but of course...

And I think the term SatireV is already being used by some student humor magazine/group.  Just to update, because of the lack of a quorum (there were less than 20% of the faculty present, about 135) they tabled the motion until the next meeting.  Apparently some expressed the worry, slightly tongue in cheek, that if the motion were voted down the headlines would look really bad (i.e. Harvard Faculty Reject Free Speech in Vote) hee hee.  Seriously though, this issue is VERY pregnant and the ladies here can probably enlighten us as to how easy or not it is to keep a baby inside that wants OUT NOW!!  :)

oh, and... welcome back, stranger!  wie geht's?!

bruce1337's picture

Quite alright!

A lot going on this side of the pond: A law's been signed to archive ALL communications beginning 2008 and the neoliberal EU constitution, voted down by all countries that got a chance to vote in the first place, is now being reincarnated as a "treaty". We're closing in on US levels of totalitarianism, and if we keep it up, might take the lead, soon. The dollar's been setting new record lows daily, lately, and -- not that it's anything new -- we're in for interesting times!

Also, I'm involved in setting up an activism platform for Krauts, counting about 100 members at this point. And in a few minutes, its first weekly webradio broadcast will air, so I'll cut this short.

How are you?

gretavo's picture

doing well

Inching towards a breakthrough here at Harvard... also things are starting to gel locally--can't go into specifics online but it's VERY encouraging let's say...

bruce1337's picture

Happy to hear that :)

I insist you go into specifics once things have irreversibly manifested. Now, not to step on your toes, what about trying to spice this place's dress up a little? I know it's of tertiary importance, but damn, I just can't help it. It's one of those urges that defy reason...

Here, a suggestion:
