GOAL is to control this area, rich in energy and connecting via sea and land routes the "west (Europe and America) and the "East" (Asia) (the Eurasian landmass) to each other and to the resources in Africa.
Same ol same ol. One thing that got Germany into trouble before WWI was their intention to build an overland  pipeline from Iraq up to Germany. Remember, who controls that area controlls the Eurasian landmass, and therefore the world! This is "Grand Chessboard" kind of stuff and is a fight that has raged for centuries if not millenia. Perhaps the area's strategic location was what those who funded (as opposed to being the ideological/intellectual force behind) Zionism saw as a way to get something out of their investment?
