I don't want any one to
I don't want any one to think I'm knocking this site. This is an idea I proposed months ago on 911blogger to deal with hierarchical issues and the possibility that the Feds may decide to shut down specific websites. It would be incredibly difficult to shut down a peer-to-peer message board/forum. Redundancy is very important in making certain that the movement's message is not suppressed or hijacked a la 911blogger.
One would hope...
...that the people will one day soon get tired of the feds continuing attempts to put us all into cages.
However, there is the current problem of non-feds, fed-wannabees, closet-feds, coin-operated-feds, ad nauseum who just have to control the speech of others.  For those who don't quite fit into the group above, this may be an answer.  I suggested this to YT at one time when the they were considering new forum software:
 OrcaÂ
Enjoy the spirit of Web 2.0 with 100% AJAX forum software for self-moderated community
In the world of accelerating technologies you don't want archaic forum software. You want something new, fresh, classy, stylish and sexy - just like Orca.
Orca introduces a new approach to building online discussion boards. The main focus in Orca is given to self-moderation - it provides tools to build a community without -moderators or administrators. It gives true freedom.
Interactive forum script with unique approach
AJAXy
AJAX is cool and trendy, but what's more important - it makes web apps work better. Orca is an AJAX forums script, using AJAX exactly where it should be used. This brings unique user experiences and considerable server load savings.
Integratable
You might already have a website, and it might already have a good database of users. Orca is remarkably easy to integrate with your existing user database. You just add it to your site, and it accepts existing members with their photos and passwords.
Self-ruling
Forums need close attention to run smoothly. Orca doesn't. We built Orca as a self-moderated community script, which can work effectively without any moderators whatsoever. This is the main difference, and Orca will be getting better at it.
GPL-licensed
Free community needs a free forum script. Orca is completely free, open-source and free in terms of licensing. It is distributed under GPL license, which should uncover its potential and make it #1 forum software on the net.

It's use of AJAX makes it very fast, at least in Firefox.  The demo is problematic for Opers, though.  It's young and lacks bells and whistles that so many dweebs think are cool.  No offense RT but, it's gotta be better than droopy.Â

Attention Andrew:
Let this serve as my final complaint!
This software looks good on the outside but it is full of bugs. I can’t believe we fell for this hook, line and sinker. You got all of us to install it and get members and low and behold you won’t support it. We pay for link removal and we don’t get anything in return for support. I have questions that have gone unanswered for three weeks now. I have over 1000 members and your software doesn’t work and I can’t get anyone to fix anything. There are no manuals or anything. People have to fly by the seats of their pants. You should have never release 6.0 until you fully tested it. Your patch files don’t work either. Just take a look at your forums. It’s full of people complaining that stuff isn’t working. I am severely disappointed Andrew. This doesn’t make sense. I am now going to have to pay someone to transfer my site to another application.
See Andrew, the problem is that you screwed up. You screwed up by giving your software away for free and now you can’t get your head above water with all the things that don’t work in it. Now you are trying to sell a $1000 package for something that doesn’t work so that you can justify paying your employees. It was a bold and gutsy move. It worked only in the aspect that everyone now has a piece of software that doesn’t work the way it was intended.
I am sorry to have to do this but I can no long support something that doesn’t work. You have cost me money by having software that only creates more problems.
I am sorry that it has turned out this way.
Regards,
Me
thanks but no thanks
Doesn't look like it's living up to the hype, and quite honestly I have issues with any company that is clearly about making money trying to help itself do that by using buzzwords like "unity" and giving away software under the guise of "uniting people". I also found a bizarre post about Auschwitz internships in their forum--sheesh!
Sorry DT, droopy might be clunky sometimes but it's never been about slickness--we're all about the content. As to whether a P2P network is necessary or desirable, I think that it's not quite that simple, since most P2P networks seem to be based on PCs that are connected to the internet through private telecoms or universities that ultimately will regulate the availability of their connected resources if some big strong entity tells them to. diversity diversity diversity is the key. We should all start writing letters in nice sealed envelopes to each other, sending smoke signals, and speaking on the phone in gibberish code if we're worried about our ability to communicate. I'm just not that worried...
Plust the Orca logo looks like a killer whale humping the planet earth--not so reassuring...
Thanks for this RT...
All I had done was look for a user moderated and found Orca. User moderation was the focus of my search back when the 911b clampdown began. It looked interesting then, though lacking bells and whistles, and the demo was fast. I had not looked at the forums to see what admains who had installed it had to say about the mechanics of it because I don't intend to run a forum.
I do appreciate your running this one. It's only droopy I dislike, not you. I'm sure that it is no easy task, particularly when your host is flaky. One thing about most forum software is the lack of a print function for a clean version to save locally. Often, there are posts that I want to keep without the forum template. Copy/paste can be insufficient if there is a significant amount of html involving important links. More often now, saving an entire page results in a document that will not cooperate well when trying to open later. So, I resort to saving as an .MHT file (in Opera) that preserves all graphics, etc. embedded in the filoe itself. The resulting file is much larger but, easier to deal with later. 911b does have that function, though without the comments. But often, that is no loss.
"[do silly stuff]... if we're worried about our ability to communicate. I'm just not that worried..."
I agree. While there may be occasions that secure private communications are necessary, I prefer to stand on my Right to speak freely. At this time, I don't see how P2P could be a solution to forum communications problems.
Thanks for taking the time to go whaling and sharing your experience.
WTF?
I commented and it went to hell. No time to do over. Thank for looking into this further, RT. No, I don't like droopy. Actually, I can't think of any forum software that doesn't irrate the crap out of me for one reason or another. However, I do appreciate what you do here!
Just realized...
I wasn't logged in so my last two posts were sent to moderator hell as anonymous posts? Â I suppose that is why the full editor wasn't available.
Droopy should ask whether you want to log in, join, or post anonymously.
Aaaaaarrrrrrrggggggghhhhh. Ψ
i think the groundwork is being laid
when you look at things that develop on the internet, you'll notice that there are very few original ideas, and the ones that there are are immediately cloned so that you end up with a gazillion options that end up being ineffective precisely because they are not standardized. who the hell wants to click on a million things like "digg" "reddit" "seen it" "checkitout" or whatever other content voting crapfucks there are now? Who wants to have to deal with 10 different chat programs? It's not like competition makes them better, either--unless you think that 3d looking or animated smiley faces really represent value-added to the chat experience.
Then there are the numerous "social networking sites". Friendster, Facebook, Ryze, etc. etc. All friggin derivative from the same idea--hey, let's make it easy for people to put up a page about themselves on the web and... LINK IT to others'! My God what a breakthrough.
Blogging sites, same crap. Of COURSE there should be some standard and whoever doesn't want to comply because they want to sell out to google or yahoo at some point can go fuck themselves. It wouldn't even be very hard technically. The biggest challenge would be to convince everyone to use the open standard. People have a way of being totally clueless when it comes to things that are good for them that the mainstream media don't want them to know about, you know, like 9/11 truth? Like abolishing the Fed? Like prosecuting polluters? Like NOT attacking countries that have done nothing to you? Like NOT licensing every broadcast medium to huge corporations out to lie and make lotso money? Like NOT electing the same assholes every election cycle?
But hey, if 9/11 truth is about anything it's about exactly this--taking back control of our lives, period.
how big is the risk?
Hi guys,Â
Theoretically speaking, how easy is it to shut down the internet if the federal gov't decides to. How will that affect the rest of the world if the US does this?
