Few people know the facts about the singular event that helped spark what ultimately became known as World War II - the international Jewish declaration of war on Germany shortly after Adolf Hitler came to power and well before any official German government sanctions or reprisals against Jews were carried out. The March 24, 1933 issue of The Daily Express of London (shown above) described how Jewish leaders, in combination with powerful international Jewish financial interests, had launched a boycott of Germany for the express purpose of crippling her already precarious economy in the hope of bringing down the new Hitler regime. It was only then that Germany struck back in response. Thus, if truth be told, it was the worldwide Jewish leadership - not the Third Reich - that effectively fired the first shot in the Second World War. Prominent New York attorney Samuel Untermyer (above right) was one of the leading agitators in the war against Germany, describing the Jewish campaign as nothing less than a "holy war."

history is HARD!

Honestly.  Thanks for this.  Indeed at that point I think Hitler had already started to show that Jews in Germany were going to be held to special scrutiny.  Why why why...

The more I read about the history of the second and first world wars the more I realize what a mess Europe has always been.

When we think of Hitler as the brain behind the holocaust, the effect is to paint that history with the trusty brush of good vs. evil.  We (people in general) are good, but among us periodically arise evil people whose twisted minds, driven by insanity, hatred, or both drive the world into turmoil.  Why try to understand Hitler in context, when he is simply a phenomenon unto himself?

The story of "Judea Declares War on Germany" as one headline of the time put it isn't often told.  Why not?  If indeed it was a simple response to the rise of Hitler's evil one would think it would be equivalent to the global boycott of South Africa because of apartheid, albeit during a time before political correctness could have operated on a global scale (or could it?)

Well, the simple answer is that however justified a Jewish boycott of Germany may have been at the time, it serves to put Hitler into context as reacting to something that had a very real impact on the people he believed himself the savior of.  At the time of this boycott Germany was still reeling from the brutal and hardly justifiable reparations scheme cooked up at Versailles.  It's easy to see how the boycott would have strengthened Hitler's position, providing proof, as he could put it, that Jews were indeed the enemies of Germany, and should be expelled.

Remember that I am not trying here to defend Hitler or his policies--as someone interested in examining history free of the effects of propaganda and historical manipulation from any side it is not my intention to sanctify anyone--whatever can be said in defense of Germany under Hitler it remains that the Nazis' philosophy of Aryan superiority and the importance of racial purity are distasteful to me as a humanist.  As distasteful as any similar philosophy such as that which has motivated Zionism.  We must remember that tyranny loves nothing better than to divide, whether along racial, classist or ideological lines.

Where my own studies have brought me are to a point of understanding the need to place all of history in the proper context in order to iscern the meta-narrative that should exist to disprove at least partially the "shit happens" theory of history that prevents us from learning the needed lessons from the past.

To understand Hitler it is necessary not just to understand his antipathy for Jews, and it was real and fairly rabid, of course, there is no denying it.  Aside from representing the epitome of "social Darwinist" bunkuim so prevalent during his formative years, Hitler also represented, for better or worse, resistance to something that was not necessarily benign itself.  Understanding those conflicts is hard when one side is saddled with representation by the "embodiment of evil", but we can try.

In the short term, Hitler (and many others for that matter) were quite aware of and threatened by Bolshevism.  The movement that overthrew the Tsar in Russia was real of course, but in what way real?  Was it really a manifestation of an oppressed proletariat fulfilling Marx's prophecy that showed an inevitable historical destiny for the working classes?  Was it, as Hitler believed, instead evidence of the truth of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which in fact came out of the very country, Russia, that fell to the Bolsheviks?  Or were the Bolsheviks and the Protocols just layers of deceptive cover for an internationally connected economic elite?

Was the French revolution, a precursor to the Russian revolution, part of the same story?  Did it serve to overthrow the hereditary monarchy thus paving the way for Napoleon to charge across Europe, redrawing maps as he went?  Did all of this "just happen"?  Did the Rothschilds simply take advantage of their fellow Europeans' lust for war or were they instrumental in feeding the lust for their own ends?  What about the American revolution,  so close in time to the French--is that connection significant?

Is all of this history, our history, a story of secular mercantilism freeing us from aristocratic dictatorship?  Is there an invisible hand guiding these events, or was there at one point, that has now become corrupted?  How does 9/11 fit into this?  To me it shows at the very least that no matter how benign the drive towards dissolution of aristocracies and religious authoritarianism since the enlightenment, something has gone terribly wrong and we are not meant to understand the story.

9/11 has made the concealment of that story--of that real history--the only story that now counts.  It is the story that is being written by us.  It is yet another story of emancipation of which history has so many (seemingly too many) examples.  It is the story, as Bob Marley put it, of the emancipation of ourselves from mental slavery.  It is a personal story for each individual on the quest, and one shared by all those so engaged.

Freedom is already ours, because we have chosen to think for ourselves.  Victory is to be had every day by sharing and spreading that freedom, and doing so in the best of all possible faith, that which recognizes that all life is precious, all life is connected, and all life depends on truth.

Onward truthers!

those beautiful philosophical musings!

i can just eat them up.

beautiful philosophy, Gretavo! your interrogative conclusions are inspired.

the big picture is not necessarily the only picture that matters, but  certainly, it cannot be forsaken.

thanks kate, and you're right

the big picture isn't everything.  the little pictures that are us and each of our individual lives connected to everyone that surrounds us--that is ultimately where reality lies, not in the past, or in a narrative.  what i want is to understand so as to live a better life, and hopefully encourage others to do so as well.  we have seen the kinds of things that lies and misunderstandings bring into being.  we have seen that whatever our understanding of history, the present is never itself safe from manipulation and deceit.  but to defeat something, even if something within ourselves, we must know it fully and truly.  i don't want to mess up history for anyone, to burst bubbles for the fun of it.  I do it because i can't not look for truth, and because I know that the world that many people dream of being possible will never come out of the tangle of lies we are mired in.  ultimately the big picture must and does give way to life, and when it does I hope to find myself in a better world than I came into and that I am told is necessarily this way!
