Scheuer because he is trying to keep his bread and butter boy alive in the minds of the people by explaining away the obvious fake with the black beard and Maher because like you say, he seems genuinely surprised that Americans (rightly) do not feel a bond with Israel.  What is happening I think is that as the people figure stuff out, their confusion is going to be going down while the confusion of the shills and pundits in the face of their imminent disgrace is going to be rising.  In the end we may have to put folks like Maher in straitjackets because the cognitive dissonance resulting when they can no longer deny their failure is going to be emotionally and mentally crippling...
