James Bamford is one of the country's leading writers on intelligence and national security issues. His books include "The Puzzle Palace,” "Body of Secrets," "A Pretext for War: 9/11, Iraq and the Abuse of America's Intelligence Agencies," and most recently “ The Shadow Factory”. Mr. Bamford coproduced NOVA's “The Spy Factory”, which was based on his latest book. While I have little reason to doubt that "Israeli companies" are helping the US government with domestic spying, let's get a few things straight.  These Israeli companies are essentially arms of the Israeli government which in all likelihood heavily subsidizes them (in all likelihood with our US tax dollars) and they are as such not simple subcontractors for bad old Uncle Sam.  More likely they are spying both "for" and ON the U.S. government, and that this is being done as a matter of official Israeli intelligence operations against its "best friend".  Fake truthers who wish to shield Israel therefore will simply allege something like this: Prior to 9/11, Israelis were being used to conduct top secret joint investigations into "al Qaeda cells in the U.S.".  They were asked to do this because it is, or at least was illegal for the U.S. govt to spy on citizens.  Now these Israelis did a bang up job tracking the evildoers for us, but their urgent warnings of an impending attack, which they desperately wanted to stop because they love Americans so much, went unheeded by evil Bush and his WASPy oil cronies, the same folks who funded Hitler when no one else would (except for Zionist sympathizing bankers, but they don't count of course), so that they could launch their war for oil and to establish their right wing christian fasicst worldview on the hapless peoples of the middle east.

Now the point isn't to get the entire world to believe this, the point is to confuse the world about what the 9/11 truth movement is all about, to preserve the myth of al Qaeda even if only as a tool of U.S. and Pakistani intelligence, and to frame future debate about the "truth about 9/11" in terms of whether Bush and his cabal acted deliberately or incompetently in allowing "al Qaeda" to strike us, ensuring that the real truth, the only version worth pursuing and that has an actual chance of uniting people behind it, gets totally lost in the mix.

This James Bamford who Jon Gold thinks is worth listening to was a co-producer for a NOVA show.  NOVA.  Of the "pancake collapse" theory in their documentary "How the towers fell."  Uh huh.  He also writes for Rolling Stone, just like our good friend Matt "Truthers are batshit insane" Taibbi.  And has had cover stories publishe in the New York "we enabled Judith Miller to pimp the war" Times.  Excellent judgment, Jon Gold!  Or is it something else?
