Excerpts from 9/11 defendants' statement
By The Associated Press – 57 minutes ago

Excerpts from the statement of five Sept. 11 defendants filed with the Guantanamo war-crimes court.

_ With regards to these nine accusations that you are putting us on trial for; to us, they are not accusations. To us they are badges of honor, which we carry with pride.

_ Your intelligence apparatus, with all its abilities, human and logistical, had failed to discover our military attack plans before the blessed 11 September operation. They were unable to foil our attack. We ask, why then should you blame us, holding us accountable and putting us on trial? Blame yourselves and your failed intelligence apparatus and hold them accountable, not us.

_ In fact, it was you who had wiped out two entire cities off the face of the earth and killed roughly half a million people in a few minutes and caused grave bodily harm by nuclear radiation? Did you forget about your nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

_ Also, you have violated all laws of war, and in particular, your treatment of Prisoners of War, in Afghanistan and Iraq. We are the best example of such violations and your "Black Sites" for torturing prisoners. This, and with your "Abu-Ghurayb" prison in Iraq. Guantanamo camps are witness to all of that.

_ Remember, that you are the ones who attacked the Iranian civilian aircraft, flight 655, in 1988 with your Cruise missiles over the Hermuz straights, killing all of its 290 passengers, among them 66 children. They are still shedding tears today over your victims. Does your blood have a value and the blood of Muslims not?

_ So, our religion is a religion of fear and terror to the enemies of God: the Jews, Christians, and pagans. With God's wiling, we are terrorists to the bone. So, many thanks to God.

_ We have news for you, the news is: You will be greatly defeated in Afghanistan and Iraq and that America will fall, politically, militarily, and economically. Your end is very near and your fall will be just as the fall of the towers on the blessed 9/11 day. We will raise from the ruins, God willing. We will leave this imprisonment with our noses raised high in dignity, as the lion emerges from his den. We shall pass over the blades of the sword into the gates of heaven.

Accused 9/11 Suspects Declare Themselves 'Terrorists to the Bone'

By JESS BRAVIN

WASHINGTON -- Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others accused in the Sept. 11, 2001, conspiracy called U.S. allegations "badges of honor" and declared themselves "terrorists to the bone" in a written statement slated for public release Tuesday.

A courtroom drawing reviewed by the military shows Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, top, and co-defendants Walid Bin Attash, second from top, and Ramzi Bin al Shibh, left, attending a pre-trial session in Guantanamo Bay in December.

The six-page statement, dated March 1, was filed with a military judge at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in response to nine charges filed by military prosecutors last year. Titled "The Islamic Response to the Government's Nine Accusations," the statement mocks American authorities for failing to foil the Sept. 11 plot and casts the U.S. as a terrorist aggressor whose own actions provoked the suicide hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people.

The statement calls the conspiracy charge "laughable."

"Were you expecting us to inform you about our secret attack plans?" it says. "Blame yourselves and your failed intelligence apparatus and hold them accountable, not us."

"Also, as the prophet has stated: 'War is to deceive,'" it states, in one of several passages that assert religious sanction for al Qaeda attacks.

Responding to charges of attacking civilians, the statement cites as grievances not only the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, both of which occurred after the Sept. 11 attacks, but also U.S. policy going back to World War II. "Did you forget about your nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki," the statement reads.

In answer to the war crimes charge, the men refer to their own imprisonment in secret Central Intelligence Agency prisons, where U.S. officials acknowledge Mr. Mohammed and two other prisoners were subjected to waterboarding, or simulated drowning. Attorney General Eric Holder has described waterboarding as torture.

"We are the best example of such violations and your 'Black Sites' for torturing prisoners," the statement reads, adding the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay as further examples of prisoner abuse by the U.S.

The men respond to the allegation of providing material support for terrorism by condemning Washington's aid to both Israel and Arab and Muslim governments.

Not only is the U.S. the principal ally of "the terrorist state of Israel," it also "supports and finances the terrorist regimes that govern the countries of the Arab world, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan," the statement says. (Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim country, but most Pakistanis are not ethnically Arab.)[c455: That is a VERY weird mistake, then, to have referred to Pakistan as part of the Arab world rather than part of the Muslim world or umma.]

The statement ends by praising the 19 suicide-hijackers and predicting America's demise. "You will be greatly defeated in Afghanistan and Iraq," it says, later adding: "Your fall will be just as the fall of the towers on the blessed 9/11 day."

The men call themselves "the 9/11 Shura Council." In addition to Mr. Mohammed, those charged include Ramzi Binalshibh, Walid bin Attash, Mustafa al-Hawsawi and Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, also known as Amar al-Baluchi.

The Bush administration filed charges against the men last year before a military commission in Guantanamo Bay. The Bush administration asserted that it would be difficult to successfully prosecute the men in federal court in part because that might force the U.S. government to disclose and defend the prisoners' treatment in CIA custody.

President Barack Obama suspended those proceedings in January pending a review of the Guantanamo detention and trial apparatus. Obama administration officials say their preference is to try alleged terrorists in federal court. The statement, along with the defendants' other public remarks claiming responsibility for the Sept. 11 attacks, suggests that conviction in federal court may not pose as many hurdles as some officials once feared.

A military attorney appointed to represent one of the defendants questioned whether his client agreed to the statement.

"There is no evidence that Mr. al Hawsawi knew about, read or signed this document ," Maj. Jon Jackson said in an email. "It is a typed message in English with no signature. I object to this highly irregular document release." Maj. Jackson said he was unaware of the statement until the military judge ordered copies sent to attorneys Monday.

[c455: Let's not forget, too, that if this is ultimately shown to be fraudulent, which I fully expect, by casting it in terms of "Islam" it is as bad as ANY blood libel perpetrated against any religious group.]

Elias Davidsson's response

which was termed a "press release" and posted at 911blogger, but which I can't find at his site:

“Latest joke from the Corporate Media

According to Corporate Media today, five alleged Al Qaeda leaders in Guantanamo have admitted to have planned the attacks of 11 September 2001, they call themselves "terrorists" and are proud of it. Among them is the individual designated as Khaled Sheikh Mohammed.

What is so funny about these news?

First, no Muslims participated in the attacks of 11 September. So it is funny to think that Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, the chap with the huge beard, would be able to get non-Muslims (kaffir) to commit a suicide operation in the name of Islam. Imagine the scenario in your mind and you'll have a good laugh.

Second, we do not really know whether the person presented to the military court at Guantanamo is actually the real Khaled Sheikh Mohammed or a fake Muslim. The judges have never met the real KSM. And no person who actually met him has been allowed to come to Gitmo and meet his old friend and identify him. That's why he was not permitted to testify at the Moussaoui trial. Moussaoui may have been able to distinguish between a fake and real KSM. According to his CV, the real KSM should know well English because he obtained an engineering degree from a US university. The chap in Gitmo, presented as KSM, cannot make a single correct sentence in English (as can be ascertained from the transcript of his "confession"). The real KSM was not religious. According to newspapers, he was a playboy who loved sex and booze. The chap at Gitmo is presented to us as a very religious Muslim. This shows us that Gitmo is not so terrible after all: It's a real circus, where fake Muslims and fake judges play for the gallery.

Third, no Muslim would call himself a "terrorist" (that's what Corporate Media reported that KSM said). Even Muslims who consider it justified to commit terrorist acts, do not regard themselves as "terrorists", but as freedom fighters. I find it funny that the script-righters did not find anything more convincing than such a self-incrimination.

The funniest of all is that many people actually believe this nonsense. They will tell us that, yes, Khaled Sheikh just forgot his English, and yes, he turned religious because he became more moral, and yes, he planned 9/11 in such a way that no Muslim names would appear on passenger lists, and yes, he is a superman because Allah is on his side. And they also will believe that he almost assassinated the Pope, single-handedly: After all he said it, and he must know.

However, the fate of the five people at Guantanamo, who - we are told - called themselves "terrorists" will not be a joke. Because they do not represent what we are told they are, and are coerced or induced to play a fake role. And that's a dangerous game. So they might one day be eliminated by the US, so no one could interview them and find out who they really are. Please keep watching what the US government is going to do with these people, who are totally innocent of any relation to 9/11.
