What's wrong with this picture?

Well, for one thing, Ziad Jarrah and I seem to have matching eyeglass frames.

For another, although it's obvious he was coached -- I mean, you can literally see the coach's hand in the frame -- it's a lot less obvious that the guy actually used a plane to make a hole in the ground in Pennsylvania.

second impression: after seeing the  script in hand and the way he was breaking into "I can't believe i'm saying this, and I can't believe how ridiculously easy this is to con the American public" laughter:  "damn! he's an arab-poser, freakin mossad agent."

Maybe I'm just a sucker for guys with good taste in eye wear, but my thoughts were that he may or may not have known how this tape was going to be used. Hence the inability to take it seriously. Also, the Christian Arab thing crossed my mind, too, but it could just mean that he went to Christian schools and his family was Muslim but not very practicing. In ANY event, the guy looks like anything but a religiously motivated, bloodthirsty "jihadi" (in the perverted sense, as it is used in WOT-speak.)

There's the possibility that this was going to be leaked and someone thought it would be prudent to do some pre-emptive spinnery and emphasize this crap notion of al Quesadilla's long-range planning and tenacity, yadda yadda... or that they can take a reasonable, well-educated, cosmopolitan dude and turn him into a mass-murderer just by snapping their fingers... or maybe that he was a sociopath... it's very hard to decipher.

surely not a coincidence but what exactly it is intended to make us believe about this dude is up to debate.  maybe it's all nonsense and he is just a distraction from one of the other hijackers?  then again (and I can't confirm this since I just gave away my copy, again) DRG's latest book I recall had a fair amount of interesting material on this guy...
