"I've been to the mountaintop."

My hypothesis -- and I think I've mentioned it before -- is that MLK was threatened before he was assassinated. Perhaps this first took the form of a threat to expose facts about his private sexual relationships, but then was probably made more clearly a death threat. This is the highlight from the speech he made the day before he was killed. He knew what was going to happen and he continued with with the work he thought was morally imperative ("God's will," in his language.) If you can watch this without crying you are truly a hard-boiled cynic.

what would MLK do?

is not a bad way to live one's life. he wasn't afraid of his imperfections and did not let them stop him doing what he knew had to be done, to the death but never threatening to use force. and so must we.
