"the region’s only true rogue nuclear state"

Unrepentant and Unbreakable
The Time for Mordechai Vanunu is Now
By RANNIE AMIRI
As the world awaits the announcement of this year’s recipient(s) of the Nobel Peace Prize, there is no doubt 2008 has been witness to a call to war.
The pressure exerted by Israel in goading the United States to attack Iran has been relentless, and thankfully, resisted up to now. In this context, is there any better person to receive the Peace Prize than the man who initially exposed the Middle East’s first—and only—nuclear power over two decades ago?
After divulging pictures related to Israel’s clandestine atomic stockpile during a 1986 interview with The Sunday Times, Mordechai Vanunu was lured back to Israel by the Mossad and subsequently spent the next 18 years in prison (11 of them in solitary confinement) before being released in 2004. "I am proud and happy to do what I did,†he said at the time. He had remained unrepentant and indeed, unbreakable.
Life after release has not been easy, however. In flagrant violation of Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Israelis placed numerous prohibitions and restrictions on Vanunu’s movements and travels. His freedom to speak with the press or any non-Israeli citizen for that matter was also severely curtailed. In 2007, he was found to be in violation of his parole, in part for attempting to leave Jerusalem in order to visit Bethlehem, and sentenced to six months in prison. The sentence was suspended pending appeals, and this past September an Israeli court reduced the term to three months, citing “…the absence of indications that his actions put the country’s security at risk.â€
As many are no doubt keenly aware, unlike Iran, Israel is a non-signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and prohibits full inspection of its Dimona reactor by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) personnel.
At the IAEA’s 52nd General Conference of Member States which recently concluded in Vienna, a resolution was passed calling for a Middle East nuclear-free zone. It implored countries "not to develop, test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons†until such a zone is established and demanded all Middle East nations open up suspected facilities to the agency’s inspectors. The vote was 82-0 in favor of the resolution. The United States and Israel were among the 13 countries abstaining. Although a second resolution more critical of Israel was narrowly defeated after opposition by the United States and the European Union, a clear message was nonetheless sent to the region’s only true rogue nuclear state.
All of this would not have been possible without the courage of Vanunu 20 years ago and today. Although often described as a mere “whistleblowerâ€, the term does not do him justice. He was rather the “siren†who first alerted the world that nuclear weapons had found their way into the volatile Middle East.
As he sits incarcerated, and as the nuclear outlier that imprisoned him manufactures the casus belli required to plunge the region into a war ironically over non-existent nuclear weapons, there can be no more a compelling set of circumstances than these needed to award the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize to Mordechai Vanunu. The overdue recipient should wait no longer. His time has come and it is now.

I ran across this book today, about Vanunu
called Dimona: The Third Temple? The Story Behind the Vanunu Revelation. I don't know about the author, Mark Gaffney, but I found the book when I was looking for his new book, the foreword to which is written by David Ray Griffin. The book is really old -- 1989. There are two reviews -- a one-star and a five-star -- here's the five-star:
Despite the naysaying of the earlier "critic" there is no way ANYONE with the slightest bit of literary research exposure or experience would be able to find one flaw in Gaffney's work...NOT ONE! In fact I now own nearly every single publication after enormous effort in tracking down so many of these mysteriously "disappeared" texts from American libraries, book stores and used sales sources. The works cited in his biblio are impeccable (often using Israeli authors and publications as well as publications of record such as NYTimes Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, etc. naming names of easily verifiable or archived documents cited in recognized TEXTS. The FACTS of the racist violence perpetrated by the morally bankrupt govt of Israel is truly heartbreaking to accept UNTIL ONE DOES THEIR HOMEWORK! As a research librarian it has taken me years to verify what Gaffney puts together in a condensed and powerful manner. The only criticism I offer the author is that this publication should be a bit better organized and a MUST would be adding a good index with cross references along with a comprehensive Biblio so that his readers will make the effort to read them for themselves (if they can even find them in the US.) Lastly, I IMPLORE ALL UNBELIEVING Jews, but particularly Zionists of Christian or Jewish faith to GO TO PALESTINE AND SEE FOR THEMSELVES. STOP THE LIES...STOP THE MYTHS..what is now known is ONLY THE TIP OF THE ICEBURG. END THE OCCUPATION. BRAVO TO MARK GAFFNEY....
The new book is about the E4B over Washington DC on 9/11.
but what is its premise?
I've been reading a couple of books on the whole thing and the most off-beat interpretation I can think of for Vanunu is that his "outing" of the Israeli bomb was deliberate and according to Israeli policy which understood that a secret nuclear deterrent is of no defensive value.
Speaking of Vanunu, let's recall that he was trapped in what is known in the biz as a honeypot--i.e. by a beautiful agent seducing him. And on that note, here is a fetching new twist in the occupation--anti-Israel plotters beware! Israelis are hoTT! Must be that dead sea mud mask...
Pretty Refusenik Brings Western Eyes to Occupation
Dunno.
The guy's *other* other book is about some secret Gnostic teaching of Christ. There's no synopsis of this book, since it is only available used.
Ooh, I can think of something utterly tasteless to say about the Pretty Refusenik and the Pretty American Martyress... but yowza, she IS gorgeous.
see now THAT is just wrong
you can't not say the tasteless thing after that!
Well, from a look at his website
and given that the book was written in the 80s, I get the impression that it's just a recounting of the Vanunu drama and an examination of Israel's nuclear program. So that would allow it to fit in with the "deliberate disclosure" theory.
the Israeli bomb
is kind of a frightening thing given the secrecy. It is astounding that no pressure is brought to bear on Israel to allow nuclear inspections like every other "civilized nuclear power".
