Bush wastes no time

Bush signs $700 billion bailout bill
Friday October 3, 2:57 pm ET
By Tom Raum, Associated Press Writer

Bush lauds Congress for passing federal rescue plan for financial industry

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush has signed into law a far-reaching $700 billion bill to bail out the nation's tottering financial industry, shortly after it won final approval from Congress.

The president signed the measure at his desk in the Oval Office. Photographers were invited in to capture the moment.

The president signed the bill after returning from the Treasury Department where he thanked employees for their work on the rescue package.

the key list

Is the one that shows who CHANGED their vote from NAY to YEA. There are about 30 of them and all they did was make the final price tag of the bailout bigger by holding out for pork-bribes.

They threw in some solar energy pork...

- and told us to stick it where the sun don't shine

Whoo hoo... Good job, Earl!

I'm not being snarky: my Rep Earl Blumenauer actually did the right thing.

Called my rep's DC office today

The aide taking the call didn't seem to happy about mine being (yet another?) anti-bailout call.  In the end, my rep voted NO once again.

I have read comment snippets of reps who didi change their vote.  Most claimed that they did so because they couldn't resist the delicious, steaming hot plate-O-pork that waved under their nose or they had learned that the situation was just too dire not to change their vote.  In other words, the threat of anthrax, I mean martial law financial armageddon was just too real.

Vote Switchers - Banking Contributions Received 2003 - 2008

This timeline is very interesting.  Contributions steadily increase during 2000 to 2005.  The level of contributions increased dramatically in the run up to the 2006 elections  and explode for the 2008 elections.  Definitely worth a look.  It appears that the bilking interests began preparing several years ago for what we have seen happen this week.

http://www.maplight.org/map/us/bill/72675/default/timeline

In Monday's vote:

An average of $140,998 went to each legislator voting Yes.

An average of $90,213 went to each legislator voting No.

Vote Switchers must have known where they stood and probably used their No vote to leverage promises of big bags of cash next week on the golf course.  38 of the 58 Vote Switchers received less than the average of $140,998 that went to each legislator voting Yes.
