[edit: I'm pasting the article here -- c455]

New York - The arrival of tens of millions of DVDs of a controversial film on doorsteps around the nation - but almost exclusively in election "swing states" - via newspaper home delivery continues this weekend, with explanatory articles and subscriber feedback appearing on some of the papers' Web sites.

The DVDs of the 60-minute film, made in 2005, and titled "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West," arrived Saturday with, among other papers, the Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer in Raleigh, with delivery with the Miami Herald and other papers set for Sunday. (To watch a clip see link below.)

Other Florida papers to distribute it on Sunday included the major dailies in St. Petersburg, Tampa, Fort Myers and Orlando.

Despite some protests from Muslim and liberal activists, the newspapers - all hard hit by drops in ad revenue in recent months - have explained that the DVD does not violate their usual standards; see our exchange with The New York Times below. A spokesperson there said the Times last Sunday inserted 145,000 DVDs in its papers delivered in the following markets: Denver, Miami/Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, Detroit, Kansas City, St Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee/Madison. Note: These are all in swing states.

The documentary showcases scenes of Muslim children being encouraged to become suicide bombers, interspersed with shots of Nazi rallies. "The threat of Radical Islam is the most important issue facing us today," reads the sleeve of the DVD. "But it's a topic that neither the presidential candidates nor the media are discussing openly. It's our responsibility to ensure we can all make an informed vote in November."

It was shown on Fox News just before the 2006 mid-term elections, and conservative activist David Horowitz screened the film on college campuses during 2007. An article at the group's site, www.radicalislam.org, all but endorsed John McCain this past week, then was pulled down. The DVD carries on-screen text near the outset that it is not indicting most Muslims.

An article at the site of the Morning-Call in Allentown, Pa. today reveals that it will be inserted in the Sunday paper there tomorrow. It continues: "A call to Clarion wasn't returned, but the nonprofit's spokesman, Gregory Ross, told the Harrisburg Patriot-News this week that 28 million copies of the DVD are being distributed nationwide throughout September. He said the intent is not to sway voters' opinions about the presidential candidates."

It has already been packaged with dozens of large papers, such as the Denver Post and Columbus Dispatch. Another article explaining the delivery runs online at the News & Observer.

E&P asked New York Times Co. spokeswoman Diane McNulty about the policy on this insert. She replied:

"We believe the broad principles of freedom of the press confer on us an obligation to keep our advertising columns as open as possible. Therefore our acceptance or rejection of an advertisement does not depend on whether it coincides with our editorial positions. In fact, there are many instances when we have published opinion advertisements that run counter to the stance we take on our own editorial pages.

"We do require that opinion advertisements include the name of the sponsoring organization and a mailing address or a telephone number. This enables our readers to communicate directly with the sponsor should they seek additional information or wish to express agreement or disagreement with the advertised message. This advertisement complied with these requirements. The address on the advertisement was The Clarion Fund, 255 West 36th Street Suite 800 New York, NY 10018."

Asked about the rate paid, she answered: "We do not disclose the rate any one advertiser pays."

Putting lipstick on terrorism?

That is just so, so sexist! Or homophobic! Or porcophobic!

Just kidding. I was greatly amused by the Palin-on-a-pig kerfluffle -- weren't her supporters bassackwardly implying that Palin was a pig? ("She's the only one who wears lipstick!")

They are getting so obvious now, don't you think?

Rather like the "death to America/death to Israel" notes in with the anthrax. No subtlety anymore with these guys.

i got this very DVD in my Philly paper this past weekend and at first glance thought it was just slipped in there by somebody at the store where i bought it on account of it being obvious propaganda. I quickly realized it actually came with the paper and got instantly enraged. this kind of shit makes me want to just give up, it makes me feel so fucking dejected.

Here's some dejection antidote... sort of...

I had two sort of freaky truth experiences today.

1. Just now, Lily was channel surfing and we happened upon Richard Gage's presentation on cable access. I was so excited I made her go watch Sponge Bob in another room.

2. I went to meet Lily and her teacher in her classroom after school because today was her first day (ten days late) since we were abroad when school started. I was sitting in the hall, waiting, when one of her classmates got thrown out for a behavior problem -- non-stop talking, as I quickly figured out. He covered a lot of territory in the ten minutes or so we were together, ending up by telling me that when he was two, he was in NYC right before 9/11. I asked him if he was in NYC *on* 9/11 and he said, "no, we didn't know it was going to happen." I said that very few people did know and he said, "well, one guy knew and got paid for having his own property destroyed." My jaw hit the floor. I asked him if he was talking about Larry Silverstein. He said that he was, and could I believe that that guy got 7 billion in insurance money? This was Lily's 4th grade classmate. Now, his statement is sort of ambiguous and I wasn't able to go into any more detail with him, other than to find out that he'd seen some documentary on tv with his dad. Nevertheless, that's one set of parents I'm going to be looking for at the back-to-school picnic!

Truth Now!

I loved hearing this story -- if the 8-year-olds know, it's all over!

holy shit, an 8 year old

holy shit, an 8 year old knows about Lucky Larry? HAHA! that does kind of brighten my day a bit actually. though at the same time its also kind of depressing considering an 8 year old(with the help of politically aware parents obviously) appears to be better informed than most americans.

gretavo's picture

i think you nailed it Chris

that IS the sad thing. millions of adults. some who are extremely intelligent, can't see something that an 8 year old can see with no problem.

kate of the kiosk's picture

i will forever recall the words of my 12-year-old

on 9/11 as she jumped off the school bus, after what must have been a terrifying and earth-shattering day, and ran into my arms, exclaiming and crying:  "Mommy, why do they hate us so much??!!" (and of course "they" being what we had been fed  to believe, blowback, etc.) I thought to myself what an astute and heart-wrenching question for a 12-year-old to ask...at the time.

we held each other in the middle of the street... for a long time.

and just as this "little one" has been exposed and has somehow grasped onto the essence of  truthing...maybe there is hope for the 20+, 30+, 40+, 50+ ....

E Vero's picture

So now she's 19 - and she's a real truther?

Kate,
I am sorry that you had to deal with this. Have you shared with her what you think is really going on?

And how do you share that with a child? We want our children to feel safe but we also want to educate them about what's really happening in the world. They get one thing at school so hearing a different view from you must have really messed her up. It's no wonder young adults are feeling adrift, not wanting to believe in anything...people lied to them and they probably sense that and distrust all authorities.

So does she "get it" now? Maybe we should somehow direct all our efforts to young people. We could even make a cartoon show, staring Real Truther and his merry web band of renegades out to discover the real truth in all its guises, fighting with fake truthers and disinfo agents everywhere. Sounds like a video game, actually.

Did Sheldon Adelson Fund "Obsession" Propaganda DVD?

Did Sheldon Adelson Fund Anti-Obama Propaganda DVD?

http://www.israelenews.com/view.asp?ID=3123

Here’s an update on last night’s post about the dirty tricks campaign involving the circulation of 28 million DVDs of the anti-Muslim propaganda film, Obsession, in U.S. swing states. In my last post, I noted that Obsession was produced by Raphael Shore with the financial backing on an anonymous backer.

Raphael Shore: from Aish to anti-Muslim impressario

Wikipedia reportsthat the film’s producer is an Orthodox rabbi.
The press has already reported that Sheldon Adelson personally
copies of Obsession to participants in the Taglit-Birthright Israel indoctrination tours he funds. Given this, plus his deep pockets support for neocon groups like Freedom’s Watch, it almost seems a no-brainer to guess that Adelson may be the sugar daddy.

The Republican Jewish Coalition has also distributed free copies of the filmin promotional mailings to U.S. rabbis and other Jewish mailing lists.

Jews on First reportsthat Obsession has been distributed by other highly partisan neocon/Islamophobic groups:

Tom Trento, who heads http://www.jewsonfirst.org/08a/www.watchobsession.org, the group that distributed the movie at the Democratic and Republican parties’ nominating conventions, told JewsOnFirst that their goal is to awaken the country…before the election so everyone can “see the insidious nature of radical Islam.” Trento said, his group’s website then directs viewers of the video to “a scorecard that shows how elected officials have voted” on terrorism-related issues so they can decide “how they can intelligently vote” in November.

The scorecard is on the website of Act for America, a group that says it has tabulated electeds’ “votes related to national security and the threat of Islamofascism.” Its Senate scorecardconsistently favors Republicans over Democrats…
Brigitte Gabriel heads Act for America. In an interview last monthwith the New York Times about her anti-Muslim book They Must Be Stopped, Gabriel said “The moderate Muslims at this point are truly irrelevant.” The Times called Gabriela “radical Islamophobe.”

Asked how he thinks the political parties compare on the issues raised by Obsession, Tom Trento said, “In my personal opinion, the Republicans seem to get it much better than the Democrats — and they get it that the problem is not a police problem, but a military problem.”

Joachim Martillo notes that Aish HaTorah is also involvedin the propaganda campaign to promote Obsession:

NEW EXCITING JOB OPPORTUNITIES AT AISH HATORAH
……………………..
1. ONLINE ACTIVISM FACILITATOR: NY, JERUSALEM OR HOME-BASED

The Clarion Fund - a new organization dedicated to educating people about the threat of radical Islam - is seeking to hire an Activism Facilitator for a new website-based project.

Launching in conjunction with the new documentary film “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West”, this website will serve as a resource of historical and current information about the issue, and ultimately facilitate the transfer of people’s desire to get involved into organized, concrete action…

2. “OBSESSION” WEB AND RETAIL MARKETER: JERUSALEM
The Clarion Fund is seeking to hire a web and retail marketing professional for the new film “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West.” This rewarding and exciting role requires an experienced web marketing expert with superior communication and writing skills.
Your primary responsibilities will include marketing “Obsession” over the web, which involves advertising on a variety of websites and generating links from other sites as well as promoting the film using e-groups and e-lists. You will be required to form retail deals with major stores, distributors, chains and websites for the purpose of maximizing exposure and public access to the film. You will also need to coordinate press with “Obsession’s” PR firm in the lead-up to the March 2007 launch of the film…

A Haaretz storyabout the film reveals Shore’s direct affiliation with Aish:

Shore, incidentally, was the director of both Aish HaTorah International and the Hasbara Fellowships, a pro-Israel advocacy group.

Aish Hatorah is making common cause with Jewish anti-Muslim activists. Several weeks ago the N.Y. Times featured a glowing articleabout Aish rabbis tutoring Jewish alpha male executives in the comfort of their own corporate lairs for the cool sum of $10,000+ a year. I’d urge anyone who knows such a corporate titan to point them to this post and the film to see if this is the way they’d like their donation to Aish spent. Teaching Torah is one thing and a goal almost every Jew approves of–but teaching hate? Is that something Aish wishes to be known for?

Shore also helped found the pro-Israel media watchdog, HonestReporting, which serves similar functions to advocacy groups like MEMRI, CAMERA, and the Israel Project.

The Haaretz story also notes the surreptitious funding of Obsession:

…Funding sources for the film remain hazy. Shore and director Wayne Kopping of South Africa are the only figures associated with the film willing to release their real names and appear in media interviews; the executive producer is listed as Peter Mier, while the production manager is listed as Brett Halperin.

But Mier and Halperin are just aliases, Shore says.
According to Shore, about 80 percent of the film’s $400,000 budget was provided by Mier.

I find it odd that some of America’s finest newspapers would allow themselves to disseminate propaganda of this “quality” essentially meant to bolster John McCain’s campaign.

They’re sending 28-million Americans copies of a film whose producers won’t even reveal who financed their project? One has to ask why the latter are holding back? What are they afraid of? Why would a Sheldon Adelson, Michael Steinhardt or other similar Republican Jewish Coalition donor try to hide their association with this film? And why should America’s newspapers be a party to this fraud?

Joachim also reveals that besides Shore, another Clarion Fund director is Richard Green of Miami-Ft. Lauderdale.
