Thanks to all of you who contributed time, energy, money, and votes to this effort! Now we're heading for the big time...
-Kevin

PS Keep those contributions coming - money gets the message out, and my peace-and-truth message can WIN in a three-way race with the other two guys splitting the pro-war vote.

3rd District Winner Kevin Barrett Thanks Olson, Targets "Pro-War" Kind

Kevin Barrett, the apparent winner of the 3rd District Libertarian congressional primary with over 60% of the vote, thanked opponent Ben Olson for what he called "a terrific campaign." "Ben Olson is a wonderful guy, and I'm glad this campaign gave me a chance to get to know him," Barrett said. "Our debate on Captain Soma's riverboat was a memorable experience. I have nothing but good things to say about him. I hope to stay in touch with him, and I will continue to work with him and his supporters in an attempt to rein in this out-of-control government."

Barrett also thanked Governor Jesse Ventura for his last-minute endorsement. "Next time I take on Hannity and O'Reilly, I want Jesse Ventura on my tag-team," Barrett said. "Seriously, Jesse Ventura is the only true statesman I see anywhere on today's political landscape, and I'm honored by his endorsement. I hope he'll run for president and win in 2012."

Barrett cited the popular Libertarian mayor of Tomah, Ed Thompson, a regular guest on Barrett's radio shows. "Ed Thompson said this primary was a referendum on 9/11. I don't know if I'd go that far...but any landslide victory for the 'conspiracy professor' Hannity and O'Reilly and the rest of the controlled media love to beat up on is very good news for the 9/11 truth movement."

Barrett added that he planned to hold incumbent Ron Kind responsible for "consistently voting for a criminal war of aggression that has wrecked our economy," and added that he had just sent the following email to Kind:

Dear Congressman Kind,

Now that I have won the Libertarian primary, I am writing to request that you ask one of your staffers to schedule the debate to which you agreed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_dCg_QYEeA

I hope you will be prepared to truthfully defend your pro-war votes, in light of the recent announcement that thousands of Wisconsin guardsmen will soon be sent to Iraq in the biggest call-up since World War II.

Sincerely

Kevin Barrett

Sensenbrenner, ex-UW lecturer advance in races

U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner of Menomonee Falls easily withstood a challenge Tuesday from a fellow Republican, while Democrats picked their candidates to take on Republican Reps. Paul Ryan of Janesville and Tom Petri of Fond du Lac in November.

Also Tuesday, voters in western Wisconsin chose Kevin Barrett — a former lecturer who made his name by arguing the government orchestrated the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks — in a rare Libertarian primary. He will face Rep. Ron Kind, a La Crosse Democrat, and a Republican challenger Nov. 4.

In the 5th Congressional District, Sensenbrenner, 65, survived a challenge from fellow Republican Jim Burkee, a Concordia University professor who was making his first bid for public office.

Sensenbrenner, who is seeking his 16th term in office, will face independent Robert R. Raymond of Shorewood in the general election.

Burkee, 40, of Cedarburg, had planned to challenge Sensenbrenner in an unusual bipartisan partnership with Democrat Jeff Walz. The two were to appear together at campaign events and combine their promotional efforts, but Walz dropped out early in the campaign.

Burkee accused Sensenbrenner in the race of backing out-of-control spending, but Sensenbrenner said his voting record showed he was fiscally conservative.

The 5th District includes all of Ozaukee and Washington counties and parts of Milwaukee, Waukesha and Jefferson counties.

In the 1st Congressional District, Democrat Marge Krupp won a three-way race to challenge Ryan, a 10-year incumbent. Both Ryan and Libertarian Joseph Kexel of Kenosha ran unopposed in their primaries.

Krupp, a 52-year-old former marketing executive from Pleasant Prairie, left her job in March 2007 to campaign full time. The first-time candidate billed herself as the most organized and best-financed among the Democratic challengers.

Paulette Garin, 46, of Kenosha also was running for the first time. The piano teacher and former marketing director said she was running because Ryan favors the wealthy and has a voting record that is far more conservative than most residents of the district.

Mike Hebert, a 51-year-old laborer from Kenosha, had run for the Democratic nomination in 2006. He said the district should be represented by a working-class man like himself and pledged to work to keep the nation from deficit spending.

A fourth Democrat, John Mogk, had also been a candidate until dropping out of the race in August.

The 1st District includes Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties and parts of Milwaukee, Waukesha and Rock counties.

In the 3rd Congressional District, Barrett defeated Ben Olson III of Wisconsin Dells in the Libertarian primary.

Barrett, 49, became well known in 2006 as some Republican state legislators tried to push him out of his University of Wisconsin-Madison lecturing job because of his controversial views on Sept. 11. Barrett withstood the challenge but did not get a new teaching job in 2007.

In campaign stops and in automated calls, he has reminded voters of his controversial 9-11 views, telling them the attacks were an inside job.

But he has focused his campaign on immediately withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. Olson, 55, agreed with him on that issue but said Barrett’s views on other issues — such as expanding Social Security — did not represent Libertarian ideals on reducing the size of government.

Olson will face Kind and Republican Paul Stark, an Eau Claire homebuilder, in the general election.

The 3rd District covers western Wisconsin, including Hudson, Eau Claire and La Crosse.

In the 6th Congressional District, Roger Kittelson beat fellow Democrat Mark Wollum to take on Petri in November.

Kittelson, 51, is a dairy marketing specialist from Lomira who said he was running to require a balanced budget, reform health care and repeal the No Child Left Behind act.

Wollum, 52, is a Beaver Dam physical therapist who favors universal health care and a program that focuses on renewable energy.

The district covers 10 central Wisconsin counties, including Sheboygan, Dodge and Fond du Lac counties.

There were no primaries in the state’s four other congressional districts.
