For weeks, Les Jameison told supporters, reporters, and petition gatherers that it was possible to put a citizens referendum for a new privately financed 9/11 commission on New York City's November ballot. From this week's New York:
They're calling for a privately funded investigative panel, empowered with subpoena authority by the City Council and staffed with their own slate, including former senators Lincoln Chafee and Mike Gravel, 9/11 widow Lorie Van Auken, and Asner. They'd redo the work of Tom Kean's federal commission, which they call seriously flawed.
Now we hear that the initiative has come up short of the requisite 30,000 signatures and will have to extend its petition drive to the next election cycle. "We were hoping to get the signatures to the City Council (before September 4) but we have come up short and are very disappointed we have run out of time," Jameison said. The Brooklyn Web designer claims the campaign has gathered 25,000 signatures and says he will soon send a formal notice to supporters of the initiative nationwide. These include 9/11 widow Lorie Van Auken and Ed Asner (who have agreed to serve on the proposed commission) and financial donors like human-rights lawyer William Pepper, former Dallas Cowboy Mark Stepnoski, and California businessman Michael Davis. 2008 - referendum campaign already successful
I see the NYC 9/11 Ballot Initiative and especially due to the efforts of Les Jamieson, its volunteer coordinator and web designer, as one of the most successful campaigns of the 9/11truth movement, and one of the best ways to eventually get a real independent investigation.
There was always the chance for the Mayor to veto the referendum vote, even with enough signatures to override a City Council rejection. However, 25,000 heroic NYC citizens and voters have signed a petition for 9/11 truth, and the campaign has broke through media barriers with programs on Democracy Now, NY Magazine, and much more..
The process and unity to get a new real investigation is using every effort to increase awareness for a critical mass awakening. The NYC 9/11truth movement deserves much appreciation, and with enough support, we will get an independent thorough investigation, testimony, and report; sooner, better than later.

What?
What possible reason could there be for cancelling all efforts before the Sept. 4th deadline??
Especially after the recent publicity in New York Magazine??
Only five thousand votes are needed and we have several weeks to get them. This should be a time for the huge last push and publicity campaign, not the time to throw in the towel?
What am I missing here? Something stinks!
If Les wants to bail out, let someone else take the lead and see this to the finish!
