The Infernal Server Error

I want to update everyone on the status of my investigation into the periodic and infuriating error that seems to come and go. I have established beyond a reasonable doubt that the error is the result of a variant on the Denial of Service Attack whereby a website is targetted by bots that overwhelm it with hits in order to shut it down. On occasion, the error has indeed been caused by this kind of blatant approach--looking at top visitors we would notice a huge spike from a given IP address, on the order of hundreds of hits in a period of minutes. Banning these IPs would usually clear up the problem. I recently began studying the access logs and found an inordinate number of hits from certain IP ranges, and during periods when the error has been particularly bad, banning these IP ranges wholesale has significantly reduced or eliminated the error. Unfortunately, some of these IP ranges may include your IP as a user--I don't have a good answer for those of you except that you should look into accessing the site from a proxy server. After months of wondering whether the problem lay with my server or Drupal database, I have eliminated that as a possibility given the remarkable coincidence of banning certain IP ranges with reductions in the frequency of errors. It is not surprising that we are being targeted--we are clearly one of the few forums on the internet that are coming close to the real truth about 9/11. Other less truthful sites don't seem to have this problem, you may have noticed. In any case, I don't expect this will be the last we see of disruption on the forum--when we plug one hole they will no doubt look to make another one. Like the crew of the USS Liberty, our goal is to stay afloat as long as possible in order to bear witness to the truth until and when the cavalry arrives in the form of mass awareness. Thanks for your understanding and sorry if this causes undue toil or trouble to any of you! If your IP has been banned and you want to know what's up, please write to me at RT at wtcdemolition daughter compost.

My IP is dynamic and renewable so, it hasn't been a problem. Whenever I have received the "This IP has been banned" message, I just renewed my IP. <:-] I didn't squawk about it because I assumed that it was being blocked because I had repeatedly hit the site with refreshes in a short period during times of repeated errors.
Though my hosting account only offers IP blocking, yours may be more featureful. You may be able to whitelist IPs for those who have static IP addresses.
I have noticed fewer errors in the past hour so, I'm sure that you're on to something. However, its doubtful that clever DOS attackers will always use the same static IP.

Hi G,
Fire away. When I use an anonymous proxy, I only lose access to videos. That is a small price to pay for a more stable browsing.
Do keep the banning focused to particular IPs if possible rather than IP ranges.
You might try Tor

Anonymouse

Many mice surf the web under the illusion that their actions are private and anonymous.
Unfortunately, this is not the way it is. Every time you visit a site for a piece of cheese, you
leave a calling card that reveals where you are coming from, what kind of computer you use,
and other details. And many cats keep logs of all your visits, so that they can catch you!
This service allows you to surf the web without revealing any personal information.
It is fast, it is easy, and it is free!

thanks cas and dicktater,
So far my ip is still allowed. But i will try that tor thing for surfing other sites.
caveat annoymousers!
Remember folks, these anonymizers don't share your info with the sites you visit, but they must themselves be able to collect info on your computer and they may or may not honest about not collecting that data. If you're using one of the portable memory solutions I suppose your identity is safer though you never know with that either...
it looks like dial-up is the culprit
I guess the slow transmission stalls the database server response? to our dial-upping friends, um... maybe a more robust hosting package on our end will solve the prob--i'll look into this (don't worry i won't hit you all up for money like 911blogger did!) but for now just be aware that that seems to be the issue--it's nothing personal!
