Wreckin' CRU

I notice Snowcrash is claiming WikiLeaks released/leaked the CRU 'Climategate' code/data/emails. Maybe he got that idea from The Independent, or Assange himself (thanks to his little helper in the audience).

It's not true. The files were uploaded anonymously to an FTP server, and were all over the internet within hours. This isn't controversial; there are hardly any other references to Wikileaks 'releasing' or 'leaking' the Climategate code anywhere on the net. Wikileaks isn't mentioned once on Wikipedia's Climategate page, for example*.

The Times only claims Wikileaks 'published' the documents.

I suspect two motivations for this lie are:
1. To steal honey for their pot so they can avoid having to release anything inconvenient.
2. To obfuscate the fact that it's easy to leak information anonymously (the police still haven't found out who it was) ... especially if you don't contact Wikileaks, and the spooks who watch them, first! And they'll redact a load of stuff too.

*But then, I suppose, this doesn't mention freefall..
