In Customer Discussions, especially here in the Politics forum, that's been an open question! We've seen some of the longest-running, greatest-length discussions anywhere on Amazon.com. And we've wondered, "How far will they go?"
Now we know. In the longest discussions on Amazon, customers have reported difficulty posting replies. The best way to avoid errors for all customers is to limit the discussion size -- to a hugely large number of posts, but a limit nonetheless!
For the discussions that we lock down, we'll create a "continuation" for each one, so you can keep hanging out there. And of course, you can always start new discussions, too! :-)

Can you elaborate on the nature of these limits. Also there are a few policy/guideline issues that some of us wouldn't mind discussing - would it be possible for members of the team to stick around for a while to discuss these as well?

The specific limit may vary over time for technical reasons.
The "WTC 7 and the 911 Conspiracy" discussion was over twelve thousand posts long. That's nearly 500 pages of messages! Even a dozen pages of messages on a single discussion thread becomes unwieldy for many customers. It makes pragmatic sense, most of the time, to start a new thought (or new argument!) with its own new discussion. On the other hand, some customers like to continue on one long, evolving, serial discussion.
