Was Howard Zinn “Asked†to Join the American Zionist Treason Parade?
With the American historian Howard Zinn, we now have two prominent voices representing the liberal left-wing of American socio-political commentary—Noam Chomsky being the other—who have made public pronouncements that they essentially don’t give a damn about the ugly, highly problematic truths behind 9/11 and consider any further investigations into the 9/11 attacks a waste of time and a distraction from “more important issues.†Although not many bloggers, especially those in the fake version of the 9/11 “truth†movement, want to point out what is really going on here, I shall attempt to offer an explanation which may clear up some of the “mysteries†as to why people who mentally should be quite capable of figuring out 9/11—and thus capable of speaking up against the true and real evil behind it—act as though understanding what 9/11 really is, as an historical event, isn’t that important; that it is not a catalyst event for the destruction of the democratic republic of the United States of America and all the wars and horrific changes happening globally at this exact moment. Why do these seemingly intelligent people and their fawning, supposedly well-read followers of the liberal left go suddenly brainlimp, SILENT and DUMB when it comes to 9/11?
Since the time of Karl Marx—son of a rabbi and the “Father of Communismâ€â€”the left-wing factions in both Europe and America have been dominated and influenced by Jews. In the cases of political commentators such as Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Amy Goodman, their influence upon the American liberal left is no different from the aforementioned historical pattern of Jewish ideological influence and leadership over the American left of the past. And in the ‘credit where credit is due’ category, the political stances these three in particular have taken in speaking up against many grave injustices, including the Palestinian Holocaust, have been admirable, which makes their silence and/ or feigned ignorance of some of the rather “uncomfortable†realities connected to the 9/11 attacks all the more disappointing. Thus, for many on the left, the leadership’s firm denial and ridicule of 9/11 Truth has been a complete mystery. Just mention 9/11, or the obvious controlled demolition of WTC Building 7, and Chomsky, Zinn, and Goodman, et al. begin looking very nervous and edgy (cf. Amy Goodman’s heavy eye-blinking reaction to just as fast as possible head for a comfy corner away from the inquiry), and then begin a blathering string of completely illogical and ignorant statements, mysteriously unbecoming of their normal erudition and reason. “Uhh, uh... we’re a busy working here. Go away! People die every day. What’s the big deal with 9/11? It happened a long time ago. It doesn’t really matter much now. Please go away and stop asking me about an attack which launched a series of wars and turned America into a Communist Police State. 9/11 is not that important. Remember the Holocaustâ„¢ Remember the Holocaustâ„¢Remember the Holocaustâ„¢.†Why on this one subject (9/11) do these normally intelligent and well-informed Jews turn into complete idiots? I’m glad you asked, and here are the most probable reasons for this phenomenon known as the “NoamHowie&Amy-Go-BrainlesslySilent Syndrome†—
Aside from the media control over any 9/11-related information in the ‘cover-up’ phase of the operation, if one takes a hard and honest look at the influences at every point of control and cover in the operational phases of the 9/11 attacks, from airport security to building security—especially the New York part of the operation—one will find the controlling hand of a politically and financially powerful group of Jewish Zionists and their “helpers,†either Israeli-born or Jewish Americans holding dual citizenship status with Israel. These points of major operational control include 1) Maurice Greenberg’s Kroll, Inc. handling all WTC building security and access; 2) Menachem Atzmon and Isser Harel’s ICTS International controlling airport and airline security and access; 3) WTC ownership and building authority in the hands of American Zionist Jews such as Lewis Eisenberg (cf. Mossad station chief Shaul Eisenberg), Lawrence Silverstein, and the Australian Frank Lowy (the two business beneficiaries of billions paid out in Property insurance, i.e. “terrorist insuranceâ€); 4) demolition crews working for a Mossad front company located in Manhattan and New Jersey, and directed by an Israeli - Dominic Suter; and 5) Zionist moles working from inside the Pentagon, such as Dov Zakheim (former CEO of a USG military contractor that manufactures remote controlled avionics systems), Douglas Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, et al.
What this all means is that if any honest, unbiased REAL and USG-independent investigation into 9/11 ever took place, the American people would come to realize that 9/11 was technically NOT an “Inside Job,†but an “Israeli-American-Zionist Job.†In such a USG-independent investigation into 9/11 the American people would also come to understand the motivations and long-planned program of Israeli Zionism from such documents as “A Clean Break: A New Stategy for Securing the Realm†in which Benjamin Netanyahu, father of the “War on Terror,†is advised as to the exact order of military takedown in the Middle East that the U.S. is currently executing. With the exception of the takedown of Heroin-rich Afghanistan, that exact same order as found in the “Clean Break†document is Iraq first, then Iran, then Syria and Lebanon, and then basically the rest of “Israel’s enemies.†If you don’t know about “the plan,†or what “the plan†is, you cannot see “the plan†when it is being executed right in front of you, and of course, the hiding of the nature of “the plan†from the understanding of the media-brainwashed masses is naturally part of “the plan.â€
In any truly impartial, REAL investigation into 9/11, the American people would also come to know that the vicious Israeli-led false flag operation against America known as “9/11†was not the first time that their “special friends and allies†the Israelis have attacked them. No, 9/11 and all its Zionista-familiar operational methodology is only the biggest of TEN other similar operations launched along a linear, 60-year historical timeline of Zionist terror attacks on Americans – a timeline stretching back to the period seven months before Israel had even declared itself a “state.â€
12:10 P.M. - OCTOBER 13, 1947
The history of Zionist terror operations against America and Americans began at 12:10 p.m. on October 13, 1947 when Rahm Emanuel’s father’s terror group, the Irgun Zvai Leumi (the “National Military Orderâ€), decided to send a pro-Partition message to the folks inside the American Consulate on Mamillah Road in Jerusalem by lobbing a hand grenade over the consulate’s seven-foot wall into the center of the compound.(1) Only two consulate employees were injured in the attack then, but Israel’s attacks against American civilians and military personnel since that October in 1947 have only proceeded to grow larger and bolder over the years.
After the 1947 Irgun grenade attack on the American Consulate in Jerusalem, we come to the bombing of the U.S. Consulate in Cairo during July 1954’s “Operation Susannah,†the aftermath of which became known as the Lavon Affair. After Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion called JFK an “enemy of Israel†because of Kennedy’s opposition to Israel’s rogue nuclear weapons program, Israel (with the help of the Meyer Lansky [Majer Suchowliński] Zionist crime syndicate) then pulled off their first state-side hit – the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Israel’s next big attack on America (to be blamed on the Egyptian Arabs) was the “shoot-to-kill†operation against the U.S.S. Liberty on June 9, 1967. The next attack on America by the enemy known as “Israel†was, according to former Mossad officer Victor Ostrovsky, a Mossad LIHOP operation – the October 23, 1983 truck bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks at the airport in Beirut, Lebanon. Remember, in the Middle East, the modern-day, massive “truck bomb†was invented and perfected by the Zionist terror group Irgun Zvai Leumi, specifically by Irgun Operations Officer Amichai Paglin, the terrorist engineer behind the blowing up of the British section of the King David Hotel. Moving down the timeline, the next Israeli attack against U.S. military personnel came on April 5, 1986 – The LaBelle Disco bombing in West Berlin. This was yet another Mossad operation, designed to be blamed on Qadafi’s Libya. The bombing of the disco and killing of the American troops was all part of Israeli PM Shimon Peres’ “Operation Trojan,†or how Mossad coerced and tricked Ronald Reagan (through a false flag attack and phony intelligence) to launch the U.S. bombing of Libya on April 14, 1986, using one hundred and sixty American aircraft to drop over sixty tons of bombs on the African nation.

Then, seven years later, the Zionist Criminal Network (ZCN) behind 9/11—the same one that basically controls the politicians, the foreign and monetary policies of the USG and all corporate media—began setting the stage for their big 9/11 operation of 2001 which would launch the “Clean Break†plan. The table was set with the February 26, 1993 bombing of the very same World Trade Center – an operation directed by FBI sayanim working with Muslim patsies. This 1993 bombing of the WTC had the exact same operational signature as the Irgun’s 1946 King David Hotel bombing (“Operation Malonchickâ€) with the milk can bombs placed around the basement’s central columns by Zionist terrorists dressed as Arabs.
Then there was the April 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, a murderous operation to be blamed on the U.S. Patriot Movement, despite the FBI, in the aftermath, finding several unexploded bombs in a high-security U.S. Federal building. Could those unexploded bombs possibly have been planted inside the Murrah Federal Building by those six Isra, I mean, men of “Middle Eastern appearance†who had been staying down the street at the Holiday Inn, and who were found to have left the country just afterwards?
Another attack against America that had Mossad fingerprints all over it was the August 7, 1998 twin U.S. Embassy bombings in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar as-Salaam, Tanzania. Using massive truck bombs in simultaneous operations was an ‘old favourite’ and much used operational method of execution for the Irgun and the LeHI (‘the Stern Gang’). Ostrovsky believes that these U.S. African embassy bombings were most likely executed by the local Mossad station, located in East Africa since “the Entebbe Incident†(June 27 to July 4, 1976). This near simultaneous bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa was used to give “terrorist credibility†in the public mind to a non-existent “terror group†supposedly run by CIA operative and asset, Usama bin-Ladin (aka Tim Osman). Israel’s next operation against America would also be one used to provide further credibility to UBL and his group of “rent-a-terrorists.†This was the attack that FBI investigator John O’Neill was pulled out of Yemen for and transferred to his new job working security for Maurice Greenberg’s Kroll, Inc. at the WTC, where O’Neill died, or rather, was killed on 9/11/01.
Setting aside the recent capture in Yemen of Arabs working for Israeli Mossad, as well as being caught in Aden for the recent bombing of the U.S. Embassy there, the final overseas strike which would “set up†the 9/11 operation took place on October 12, 2000 against the U.S.S. Cole harboured at Aden in Yemen. And with regards to this attack on the U.S.S. Cole, it must be remembered that the Israelis have already shown a historical predilection for attacking U.S. Naval vessels and blowing holes, torpedo-like, in the sides of them.
This historic timeline of Zionist terror operations against America brings us back to September 11, 2001, and from only a cursory contemplation of this history, you can certainly imagine why someone like Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, or Amy Goodman—as Jews—would be absolutely scared 100% shitless of handling the truth of 9/11 and all the history behind it and connected to it. When you take on 9/11, you take on The Kosher Mob. The Cartel has ways of convincing “fellow tribe members†to just STFU, or start sounding completely senile like Chomsky and Zinn.
As was the theme in Part 2 of “Wired for Terror,†the leadership of these people have consistently throughout history put the average “Joe Jew†into extremely embarrassing and horrible spots. The leadership is always ready to sacrifice “their people†for their own demonic ends. As many have pointed out, the Jews were the very first victims of Zionism, and if they are to save themselves, they must put their leaders in chains, oh say like next week at the latest.

Laz, let me tell you how use of "communist police state" reads. As you are probably aware, within 9/11 truth "theory" the hypothesis has been put forward that with the swing of the executive and legislative branches to the leftish (Democrats aren't very far left, as we know) there will be an attempt to steer 9/11 truth discourse toward a right-wing and even violence-advocating position in order to make it just that much more unpalatable to average people. "Communist police state" reads like it could be part of an effort like that. Is that your intention? If not, why the sudden need to include the word 'communist'?

influences inside of me that is probably, and I hope, only occasionally rubbing you the wrong way. On that topic, I would like to clear up a few misconceptions here about my writing style and voice. Firstly, I am not treating this blog as a peer reviewed academic journal, and therefore I am taking literary, style and format licenses that I would not ordinarily take in an academically published journal or magazine, and yes, I am published (completely different subject matter though).
And Gretavo, I do have those Bromberg references for you. I hate bibliography work, another necessary tedium when they are hand-written. Actually one of the references is on one of those three blog/website links that Gulu posted (thanks Gulu, and for the Kristallnacht False Flag post as well. It just absolutely never ends).
Secondly, if it weren’t for the occurrence of 9/11 and finding out about the larger context it sits within, I would not be reading, researching, or writing about anything having to do with politics, Judaism, Zionism, Israel, the Holocaust™, terrorist intelligence operations, etc. I had a completely different mental/research life before 9/11. 9/11 has ruined many lives in many ways. In a larger sense, we are all victims of 9/11, and that is why I become so damn mad sometimes. The open flaunting of treason, naked hypocrisy, constant lying, and arrogant, barbaric and violent abuse of humanity by “certain people†just BURNS MY SOUL.
The rule is: When you are Doing a Holocaust, you automatically forfeit your right to whine about another Holocaust while at the same time demanding more museum funding and reparations cash. Whether this particular Holocaust was real or fabricated is irrelevant. This is called the Anti-Hypocrisy rule.
The third item I wanted to discuss relates to the second, and that is that two of my favourite writers and socio-political commentator/comedians are Hunter S. Thompson (Professor of Gonzo journalism) and the comedian Lenny Bruce, who also wrote (“How it Talk Dirty and Influence Peopleâ€). So some of my literary license and dramatic intensity is most probably due to the HunterS.ThompsonLennyBruce school of political and historical, surreal/socially shocking comedic sarcasm, flavoured with the flaunting of the rules of an abstract left-right Authority by challenging “even†the sacred cows of so-called “left wing†Authorities, such as the nitpicking cult of “Political Correctness™†administered by the Language Policeâ„¢. And it is my strong opinion that the whole “Political Correctness™†cult being pushed from “the left†side of the artificially created political spectrum is a complete manipulative con job. Much has been written on this. I am not alone in my opinion, and Lenny Bruce would most definitely concur on this item as well. I can hear him now:

In the hands, or rather, writings and newscasts of the Zionist fifth column, the terminology and ideology pertaining to a “left†vs. “right†socio-political spectrum are merely illusions employed in service of the changing expediency of the moment. Whether North America turns into a rightish “fascist police state†or a leftish “communist police state†is beside the point, which is that some flavour of “police state†is being engineered, and it is being engineered from “the inside†by a dedicated Fifth Column of traitors. Totalitarianism, whether from the right or left, is still totalitarianism. That is the point. I also do not believe that the Israeli-controlled White House is making any kind of ideological shift at all – this is only another illusion being fed to the public. I used the word “communist police state†to describe a particular possible strand of totalitarianism being woven into the fabric of the flags of our nations. What is apparently being developed is a hybrid police state which will employ the best of communist totalitarianism and the best of fascist totalitarianism, a blending perhaps of “Nineteen Eighty Four†and “Brave New World.†According to my Russian Orthodox sources (which “Patrick†may call total liars and fabricators), one of the laws passed by the Bolsheviks involved assessing a fine on someone for advocating the belief in God. Like one of the tendencies seen in the “modern left,†the Bolsheviks were also no friends of the principle of freedom of the press and freedom of speech.†‘Hate Crime’ laws involving freedom of press and speech, Stalinist work camps for political dissidents and historians, KBR concentration camps for American political dissidents, bloggers, historians, et al. Anti-religion, Anti-real freedom of the press and freedom of speech, while posing as “socially liberal,†and the placing in prison of historians and writers for researching topics which will bring the downfall of State-approved history – Communist-lefish-Fascistic-rightish Totalitarianism. I don't expect you to waste nearly as much time as I do observing the truth movement at other sites (such as Truthmove where there is an argument going on about who coined the term "9/11 truth") or making projections about how 9/11 might be spun under a Democratic president, but then you need to pay attention when someone else points something out.
Under Obama, it won't be possible for us to be crazy Bush-haters -- just as under Clinton it wasn't nearly as compelling to be a crazy left-winger. Therefore, the more they can paint us as right wing John Birch/Timothy McVeigh kin, the more they can effectively marginalize us, up to and including some kind of false flag event like OKC. That's why, in the absence of a compelling rationale for saying "communist police state" instead of "police state", I think you should YOURSELF stay out of the "fake" left-right dichotomy. While you're at it, you might do a little unpacking of your use of the word "Jew". As has been harped on again and again, the problem is with Zionism, not the practice of the Jewish religion. To the extent that people who practice Judaism ("Jews")are encouraged to adopt a national identity ("Jews") it is reasonable to use the word carefully to refer to people with a loyalty to the "Jewish nation" and the "Jewish state." It is NOT reasonable to use it as if there is something inherently menacing or unwholesome about people who practice the Jewish religion or people who identify ethnically as Jews AND ALSO resist the apartheid policies of Israel or neo-con warmongering here at home. My impression is that you are getting careless about this distinction, either because your anger is getting the best of your reason OR because you are starting to actually feel a form of judaeophobia (fear and loathing of the "Jewish identity" in any form.) If the latter is the case, you risk undermining not only your own credibility but damaging the credibility of the site as a "no-hate anti-racist forum." I'm not going to sit by idly while you do that.
BTW, feel free to skip the high-octane testosterone personalization of this debate. Yes, I KNOW the stakes are high. Yes, I'm OUTRAGED at the behavior of Zionists. (For example, they currently have three international observers in jail after abducting them and the fishermen they were with in Gazan waters.) For me, these factors make me that much more meticulous in separating the different strands of identity that get labeled "Jewish."

Whatever general criticisms one may make of Chomsky, Zinn et al, it certainly is not true that they have ever trumpeted the theme above. The Anti-Defamation League can be charged with pushing that, and could make an argument that Chomsky et al have failed to give relevant attention to the revisionist arguments which have been developed by Carlo Mattogno and others, but it is not true that they have ever tried to push the idea of "Remember the Holocaustâ„¢" onto the public. If anything, before I encountered some of the more serious revisionist literature in late 2003, Chomsky had already made it clear that Elie Wiesel, Simon Wiesenthal and most of the more prominent "Holocaust remembrance" clowns were dishonest hoaxers. Although I didn't see any reason to believe that the essential "gas chamber" stories were false in any way until I was introduced to Mattogno, but Chomsky had already cleared the ground by making it apparent that the bigtime "remembrance" advocates were cynical manipulators. I still wish that Chomsky had taken a few extra steps, but it's a slander to say that he spent his time going around with "Remember the Holocaustâ„¢". That just isn't true.

I consider the non-Jewish neocons in particular, VP Cheney, and Sec. of Def. Rumsfeld and other government insiders to be part of the conspiracy. The plans may have been largely hatched by Israeli firsters who seem to be in most key spots, but I think they needed the willing participation of the leadership in the White House and Pentagon as well as in more key areas of the bureaucracy to pull off such a large and diabolical plot as 9-11 and its coverup. I think a deal was struck between the Israeli firsters who wanted Iraq, Iran et al, and the Cheney/Rumsfeld group who are close to the oil and arms industry. Both parties have a stake in executing the 9-11 attacks. What I am getting at is that this was not a purely outsider (Israeli) operation but rather a collaborative work of both insiders (Cheney/Rumsfeld clique) and outsiders(Israeli and Israeli-Americans that you pointed out in the OP).
I may be mistaken here as I have no evidence to back my claims. I am just supposing this due to the scale of the operation and thoroughness of the coverup.

I think there definitely *is* evidence to conclude that non-Jewish neo-cons were involved. My best guess is that 9/11 was not one single act of war but a single spectacular day on which a couple of overlapping groups could carry out their overlapping agendas. Hello Casseia, on my six-fold usage of either the word “Jew†or “Jewish†I would like to examine why this would disturb you so, and why you would say that I was employing these words with sinister intent. Here is the complete set of “disturbing†sentences and my explanation of why I chose particular words within the context.

Last time I studied the history of the American Left—early 20th century onward—the above statement held true. Although there were many adherents to Zionism, there are also Jews “on the left†who are anti-Zionists, so I can’t very well say that the Bolshevik leadership, or the American and European Left are “dominated and influenced by Zionists.â€
The word Jew is not a ‘bad’ word. It comes from Jude and Judea, the ancient country that most “Jews†of today imagine themselves to have had some sort of ancestral, tribal, and biological connection to – a phenomenon much like American Hindu converts believing that they were once South Asians, and that therefore they have the right to seize Indian real estate and political control because the elephant deity Ganesh awarded it to them in a dream recorded in an anonymously written story in some old book.
The Torah-orthodox, religion-oriented definition of a “Jew†is one who follows the commandments of the God whose house, or temple, is in Judea. One of those commandments that Rabbi Weiss always mentions is found below in the scroll of the prophet Jeremiah.

Should I have called them Zionists? Seriously, though, I didn't actually see anything wrong with what LT said, and I'm automatically on the lookout for that sort of thing, too, because I don't want to be associated with it. (I love plenty of people who identify as jewish - orthodox or atheists. [I know, it's confusing.]) You Cass are very sensitive and smart regarding language, so maybe you can point out where you think LT was wrong.
It's hard to believe, because most people favor their own group among others, but I've heard this story so many times -- that Zionist jews had no problem sacrificing other jews for their own purposes, as far back as in the eighteenth century. What are you talking about with regard to the 4-part PBS series? I don't have tv, so I cannot decipher your text on this one. Something about agribusiness? I'm into sustainable eco-farming myself - can only read about it at this point, since our neighbors would complain bitterly and loudly if we let a cow munch on our suburban yard. If you've ever read "fast-food nation" you'd eschew industrial meat. Milk is the same (pus and other crap in there), so we get ours (unpasteurized) from a local farmer whose cows eat grass, as all ruminants are meant to, and wander about the pastures. Eggs are from chickens, who are supposed to eat worms and bugs and other beings of protein, not corn-based feed.

and since we're paying such a high meal ticket, i told her that in her
picking classes for next semester, she should extract from the best
professors she possibly could (any recommendations?).
I earnestly wish to find a university/college where:
1) The biologists understand and teach about the real cause of AIDS (which is not HIV) in their virology lectures.
2) The soil scientists understand and do research and teaching on holistic (non-factory-farming) agriculture.
3) The historians teach the real history of the Jews as well as the events of WWII, all the false-flag events that jump-started the wars in the last century or so, right up to 9/11, 7/7, etc., etc.
4) The finance department teaches about real banking.
...and The political scientists teach about propaganda, machiavelli, etc, the journalists teach about freedom of speech and media ownership, the climate people teach about global temperatures, their independence from CO2, their dependence on the sun, and the impact or non-impact of humans ... blah, blah, blah, I could go on and on. What a bore I am.
That teaching institution, if it exists, is not UR, nor is it my college. So I don't know what to recommend to your spud. She could contact Andrew Slominski, a 6-year marketing (I think) senior, head of the truth movement at UR, and a stellar photographer (email: andrewslominski@gmail.com). He seems clued into about 65% of the official lies, and I'd mostly trust his opinion about UR profs. What she really needs though are two things: 1) the ability to think critically and 2) sufficient assertiveness to question whatever shite her profs are ladling out that day. I'm sure with you as a mom, she's on her way . . .

Hi E, I remember reading your interaction with Laz over use of the word "pussy" and being unable to jump into the conversation because my European internet situation was so limited.
Here's an example of what bothers me:

Fifteen minutes with the Google got me enough information to know that Marx's relationship with the Jewish identity was much more complicated than what is implied by "son of a rabbi." In fact, Marx's father was a convert to Christianity and what's more, it sounds like he only did that for reasons of professional expediency and was actually an agnostic. What does it mean to refer to him as a "Jew" in these circumstances (father AND son)? It sounds to me like it's playing right into the idea that Jewishness is a genetic legacy or an essential quality. Who benefits from the idea that non-religious persons (certainly Marx and probably his father) are "Jews"? You can't have it both ways -- both criticizing atheist and Zionist "Jews" for hiding their ideological identities behind a religion they do not actually practice AND pretending there is some essential, genetic quality to Jewish identity.
My central criticism -- which applies more broadly than just to Laz -- is that a much more nuanced understanding of identities of all kinds is REQUIRED by this sort of debate. Rather than reifying Jewishness, Jewish identity needs to be seen as an active process of self-definition that conditions other strands of identity. Specifically, the problem most of us here have is with people whose identification as "Jew" leads to and identification with "Jewish national" which then leads to Zionism. That's not all Jews, we all agree.
The trickier part of this is people whose identification as "Jews" IS a national or tribal identity that doesn't rise to the level of advocating a Jewish state (Zionism) but still engenders group loyalties which obscure objectivity (POSSIBLY the reason for Chomsky and Goodman's 9/11 blindness.) In treating this manifestation of Jewishness, laser-like precision is needed, and advancing the idea that Marx's fundamental loyalty was to a Jewish nation and his central identity Jewish because his ancestors practiced Judaism is just an essentialist crock of shit. Moreover, it's the kind of crock of shit that makes people run in terror from ANY critique of Jewishness. And frankly, that makes me suspicious.

I think you must be much smarter than me (than I?? see!), because I only ever understand about half of what you say!
I did manage to glean what you said about Jewish identity being confusing (and subjective). And I hear what you say about Karl Marx -- assuming he identified as a "Jew" is a little presumptive, esp. when he (and his pop) are atheist/agnostic. That is logical thinking on your/our part.
Let me tell you a story about a fellow whom I dated for five years (seemingly a lifetime ago): He and his family were atheists going back several generations. He himself (let's call him P) never once participated in any ceremony related to organized religion, never cooked special meals, was never bar-mitzvah'd, and was not circumcised. P had a Spanish name but grew up in northern Italy. P had a father and an uncle who were interned in camps during WWII, for being a political enemy of Mussolini and for being gay, respectively (and neither died in camps). P and his family had homes in several countries and he himself resided in the US when we were together. He identified as a "Jew." I was completely mystified until he told me about his family getting kicked out of Spain in the fourteenth century. I would say for P being Jewish was a racial/ethnic thing, and that one historical event was enough to cement his identity.
This I still didn't understand - my ancestors were some combination of Celts, Vikings (who raped the Celts), and Brits (who slaughtered the Celts), most of whom were pagan or Christian, but I have always just felt like a plain old American. In fact, I now disavow _that_ identity altogether. I guess when I get to the UN camps or whatever, I'll tell everyone that I'm Canadian so I'm not associated with all that America has done in my name! ('What's up, eh?')

This is a VERY important discussion that needs to take place, and since C455 is such an incorrigible intellectual I thought I'd throw in my folksy two cents by using my own life as an example.
This argument is about many things, and a few things that are fairly complicated. Namely, the issue of identity. What is it? How does it influence people? How is it manipulated by some to influence others?
This discussion need not focus just on Jews--identity politics is something that influences everyone who identifies with a group or an idea. As Americans some of us were raised (not necessarily by our parents but by TV, school, etc.) to identify as Americans, specifically to identify with certain ideas about what it means to "be an American". For me this was a bit complicated since I was also being raised (mostly by my parents) to identify as a Puerto Rican. This meant that I grew up feeling connected to and a part of two somewhat different identities (at least!) On the one hand, I recited the pledge of allegiance in school, was taught to be proud of our democratic heritage, and immersed myself in some fairly uniquely American traditions--Halloween, football, fireworks on the fourth of July (under the Washington monument, no less) and many others.
Then there were what I irreverently now refer to as the "spicnics"--the gatherings of area latin@s (@ stands for a and o, making the word gender neutral) at parks to speak spanish, network with other latin@ families, eat latin@ food, etc. I recall these fondly and am quite happy that my parents made every effort to make sure that their kids did not "forget where they came from" while at the same time doing nothing to prevent us from becoming Americanized to the extent that no one would ever suspect we were anything but generic "Americans"--no accents, fully conversant in the popular culture, etc.
I can therefore understand pretty well what it must be like to "feel Jewish" at the same time as "feeling American" and not seeing anything inherently contradictory in this. There is however a big difference between the non-state of Puerto Rico as a "homeland" and the Apartheid State of Israel as a "homeland". Puerto Rico belongs to the United States but is not a part of the United States. Puerto Rico does not have its own army but instead Puerto Ricans serve in the American armed forces. Puerto Ricans are US citizens by birth but are not eligible to run for president. No American who is a resident of Puerto Rico pays federal income taxes, since by living in Puerto Rico you are not represented in the US Congress. Many but not all Puerto Ricans speak english as a second language, and the culture has proven somewhat resilient to Americanization, though there are major exceptions especially in areas of commerce and popular culture.
Another big difference between Jewishness and Puerto Ricanness is that Jewishness has been around for millenia, with Zionism and Israel being Johnny come-latelies to the identity equation whereas Puerto Rico having been around merely for a few centuries became an identity around the time that resistance to Spanish colonial rule began to arise in the 1800s (though my PR history is shamefully poor so don't quote me). Interestingly, the Spanish American War made PR a US possession around the same time that Zionism was asserting its authority over Jewish identity. Having long desired autonomy from the Spanish, certain segments of the population of Puerto Rico found the imposition of a new colonial relationship distasteful and wondered why PR could not, like Cuba under the same circumstances, be granted independence. Thus was born a strain of nationalism that exists to this day on the island and which serves both to remind more assimilationist Puerto Ricans that they have access to an indentity independent of the "facts on the ground" of American influence and dominance and to give pause to those Puerto Ricans (a significant plurality but not majority) who aspire to US statehood. The status quo of "free associated state" represents a delicate balance between vying identities and as a result has become the main force for defining Puerto Rican identity as one that is very malleable, enabling Puerto Ricans to feel like they are still a part of a distinct culture no matter how much they decide to assimilate into the dominant culture and politics, enabling the Puerto Rican identity to live on in a large global (though mainly US based) diaspora. Most Puerto Ricans are happy to be part of the "American experience" and are even happy for American influence on the "home island", with no desire to assert an independent military stance vis a vis the US.
Because contrary to the Puerto Rican experience the Jewish diaspora preceded Jewish nationalism, the same time period (the first half of the 20th century) that created the "free associated state" experiment in Puerto Rico created the Apartheid State of Israel in Palestine. While Puerto Rican nationalists had little support available outside of PR, Jewish nationalists had an extensive global network of very powerful groups and individuals that could lead a successful armed movement that established dominance over their claimed homeland.
This little history lesson serves to illustrate how the character of a group identity and its influence on its members depends on factors that are far from merely cultural--they depend on a whole host of factors not least of which are wealth and geo-political reach and influence. If the point is not clear, let me make it explicitly--I am rather content with the nature of my dual American/Puerto Ricanness and am glad that I don't have to contend with the pressure of a bullying identity police like the Zionist movement. While there are those Puerto Ricans who decry "assimilationists", the vast majority of people identifying as Puerto Ricans see no point to nationalist aspirations and content themselves with a purely cultural identification. Supporting this, right or wrong, is the fact that Puerto Rico has never been independent, going from a second class Spanish territory to a second class American territory so that many argue that however little has been gained nothing has really been lost in terms of heritage. In contrast, the Zionist movement can refer way back to the quasi-historical reigns of Kings Solomon and David to a time of glory since lost in order to rally Jews who may not identify with the Jewish religion to the cause of Jewish nationalism. The fact that Solomon's acension to the throne was marked by the building of the temple in Jerusalem of course links Jewish nationalism indelibly to Jewish religion, but more importantly it is a geographic reference point with which to lay claim on Jerusalem in the face of it long having been claimed, with a mosque to prove it, by the Islamic faith--or in Jewish nationalist terms, by "the Arabs".
Perhaps because there exists no Puerto Rican parallel to militant Zionism there is no Puerto Rican parallel to "the Holocaust", which is to say there is no implicit threat that not supporting the militant nationalists will bring catastrophe on us. Again, I am quite happy about this fact since otherwise I can see from the way 9/11 has been used to scare Americans into abandoning critical thought that if anyone ever decided that a manufactured Puerto Ricanism would be useful to their agenda then I would find myself feeling less comfortable identifying as Puerto Rican, which would be a shame given how much I enjoy beaches, pork, and plantains.
