trying to nail jello to a wall!
Hi Lazlo,
I really enjoyed this bit from your article: "...trying to nail jello to a wall". What an excellent metaphor!
It's the supreme of aggravating ironies that some organizer of an
al-Nakba “Free Palestine†march says that a sign with the phrase “9/11
& The War on Terror are Frauds!†is "anti-Semiticâ€. Especially
since everyone in Palestine knows that Mossad and US intelligence
pulled off the operation together.
I experienced the same in New York City during a march in support of
the Irish Republican Army hunger stikers. Bobby Sands had just died and
two or three other comrades were on the brink. Everyone was
demoralized, just lumbering in the street (not even walking) with
banners drooping and barely moving. A number of us began to chant "IRA
all the way" and everyone got excited, stood up, began to smile and
...march. We were immediately asked to leave by the "leftiist"
solidarity organizers. They sent their "peace marshalls" to tell us - I
am not making this up: "Your chant is violent. Leave right now or we
call the Police". We left.
The best, I feel, in what you wrote above in your searing and totally
justified barbequing of the fake left is the advice for people to form
Affinity Groups, to "Form a trusted cadre of friends" with whom one can
develop deep personal and political relationships to carry out successful
and efficient actions up against the Machine.
Doing that generates multiple layers of safety and accountability, and it can
provide avenues through which to experience directly the foundational elements of popular democracy.
There's an excellent pamphlet from long ago on this (1971), titled
"Anti-Mass, Methods of Organization for Collectives",
here
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/blackchip/antimass.htm
and here, in plain text:
http://www.spunk.org/texts/misc/sp001304.txt
The print edition had beautiful simple graphics accompanying some paraphrases of the main text. One of them was "Mass is Class thinking on its Ass".
I tend to like that kind of political anal-ysis.
